blah President's Day 5K + 3.55 mi 00:26 07:27 pace

Met up with Teri P., Scott B., Tricia P., Russ G., and Dave D. for the second annual Mount Vernon Running Buddies 5K. I was curious to see how my back/hip responded after being tight all weekend. The first 100 yards was brutal and I nearly pulled the plug and just stopped. I made myself keep going to the half mile mark as that was the moment of truth when I would either keep going for the whole loop or could still shut it down and only have a short walk back to my car. I decided to try to speed up to see if that helped and it seemed to. I knew that as soon as I stopped I would be in pain again, so I just bit my lip, dropped the hammer, and finished the course. I'm pretty stiff now and plan to try to get some stim treatment later today when our trainer is in. I'm thinking I might need to shut things down for a couple of days as I can't even walk without a limp. :( My legs feel good...it's just the right lower back/hip area that is causing me issues.

Here were today's splits:

Mile 1 - 7:57, Mile 2 - 7:11, Mile 3 - 6:54, last .55 - 8:06 pace. I finished the 5K portion in 22:50.

Oh jeez...that doesn't sound good :(. Hopefully just a strained muscle that will heal up with a couple of days of rest. Do you what it was that first caused it?

I noticed that my right hip was tight on Saturday when I ran my long run (13 miles) and I kept things around an 8:10 for most of that run. It was after the run that my lower back/right leg started locking up on me. It's kind of like an IT band issue, but not quite in the right spot.

Man that is not good. Have you considered seeing a chiropractor?

Man, that sounds painful. You have your mind in the right place about it. Praying God guides you and that you have the strength to follow.

Thanks for the prayers, Heather. Mike, I'm going to see what our trainer thinks. I've had back issues before (prior to running) and this is different than anything I had then. I'm hoping it's something a little time off will take care of.

Definitely see what rest can do for it and get some professional advice if you can (i.e., not from me!). Hope you figure things out.

Ugh....Sorry to hear that, Dave!! Have you tried anti-inflammatories? They really helped with my low back issue earlier in January. I hope you can get some relief soon!

I do need to do that, Kim. Thanks for the reminder. I'll be making time for the foam roller again today, too.

UGH! That's frustrating! I have dealt with some lower back issues for years and massage really helps me, especially as I up my mileage. I get one about every 2 weeks. Hope you get better soon and this is just a minor hiccup in your training!

Thanks, Molly. I hate to have to back off the training, but there's still plenty of time left.

Sorry to hear it's still bothering you...kind of sounds like sciatic. Don't know that foam rolling would help that. Anti-inflammatories, ice & then alternate with heat might help. But you really might try to see someone if you don't see improvement.

Cindy, the pressure of the foam roller actually feels pretty good, but I agree that some anti-inflammatories are needed. I'm not walking as bad as I did after my run on Saturday, but it sure was uncomfortable to run.

Sorry about your back Dave. Next time we know what you need to do - not stay at my pace!!

I'm not convinced that was the problem, Teri. I'm probably off for a couple of days to see if it gets better.

Hopefully the back and hip calm down with some anti-inflammatories, ice and stim treatments. I can safely say, I know the hip pain. =) Amazing job today mentally fighting through a tough run and holding onto a great pace. Fingers crossed for the next couple of days!
