The plan called for 7 miles at marathon pace today, but my dream goal was to push it to do 7 at a 7:00 pace. When I woke up to see a fresh sprinkling of snow on the ground, I wasn't sure how that would play out, but I still wanted to see what I could do. I met up with Teri P., George H., Scott B., and Tricia P. at the MVNU chapel and then we all took off.
The first mile was a quick one, but I felt like I kept it under control and didn't go too fast that I would be spent by the end. The footing was ok as I was making the first tracks of the day. From there, the footing got a little tougher as it was best when stepping in the fresh snow and not the slush or tire tracks.
I got through the first three miles and was 25 seconds under pace with splits of 6:43, 6:52, and 7:00. Miles four and five were pretty consistent at 7:03 and 7:01, but then things got tough during mile six. There's a gradual incline, the road had gotten icy, and I was starting to fatigue. (I realized that about the five mile mark is where I should start refueling, but didn't prepare for that today but I am making a mental note of that.) I ended up with a 7:20 for mile six, but when I heard the Garmin beep at the mile mark and saw it said 42:00 that I really had a shot to make my goal. I dug deep and pushed myself to finish strong. Somehow, I cranked out a 6:59 final mile. :) I was spent, but I had made it!!!

Way to gut it out Dave! Sweet run!

Holy speed, Batman! Amazing job digging deep and getting the pace you wanted. You are gaining some great endurance speed. Awesome job.

Ryan, if I hope to BQ, I need to run a 3:15 flat. That would be 37+ minutes faster than I did Columbus in the fall in my first attempt at a full.

Ironically, Brandon, that's not true because Todd H. blew by me in the opposite direction just as I started that last mile. His cool down would be faster than this. :)
