good Jingle Bell Run 3.1 mi 00:26 08:26 pace

We've run this one several years now, but it has changed a lot over time. It takes place over at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. It used to be an untimed fun run, with the first 3 men and women crossing the finish line being awarded. We didn't even have bibs, and the course map was drawn on a piece of poster board displayed at the race start. It also ran most of it on the Cofrin Arboretum trail. A couple of years ago, they began timing it and offering 10 year age group awards (I won in mine), and then last year they changed the course so that now it is all pavement and run within the UWGB campus. I understand the changes - it is supposed to be a family friendly event, but it is hard for families to be out on the trail together, and also timed events bring in more runners, which brings in more money for the Arthritis Foundation - but I have to say that I do miss the old days!

We always enjoy this run, but this year we had the best weather by FAR! We've run this one in single digit temperatures and on ice in previous years, and today we had upper 30s and sun. Neither of us was feeling great due to that Christmas party last night, but we both did OK. I ran it a minute and a half faster last year (took 4th in my age group then, too) and even if I hadn't had 4 cosmos and little food last night (because of my dietary restrictions, all I could have was the green beans and mashed potatoes), I am simply just not as fast as I was a year ago. It's a fact.

I wanted to run this faster than the turkey trot a couple of weeks ago, and I did do that!

I finally got to meet an Instagram friend that I kept missing the past year. She and her husband were also at the Christmas party last night so I met Whitney there first. We ran the first mile today together. We have run a LOT of the same races and often finish very close to each other, but never have met. She finished about a minute behind me today. I kept thinking she would catch up, especially during the last mile when my stomach was really burning (I felt OK today otherwise) and I fell off a bit.

Like I said, we enjoy this race. Our tradition is to afterwards go to the mausoleum where my grandparents are (it's closeby) and we leave the jingle bells from our shoes on one of the Christmas trees that are put up for the holidays. My grandparents were really special to us both, and they almost raised me my first few years, and they loved hearing about our running! (Then after that, we go to breakfast.)

Until next year.

    Great Performance:

You are so right, Kim! Sometimes the good old days were better ... Congrats anyway on running faster than last year! As for your grandparents, I am pretty sure they love to hear about your running adventures, and watching over you.
