I use Asics 2160s trail shoes and the key for me to get them one width wider than usual because my feet swell on long technical trail runs. I've also heard great things about Brooks Cascadias.

They don't protect ankles, but I am wondering if the stiffness actually encourages my ankles to roll. Some of the minimal trail shoes have protective soles with lots of traction but lightweight uppers.

I wear Keen A86 Trail shoes. They are minimal shoes. I do all sorts of terrain and have absolutely no problems. I do cheat i guess and use dr scholls high arch support because otherwise my arches would kill. otherwise i love my shoes. really its all individual preference.
the only differnce with trail shoes April is that they are suppose to have protection on keys areas (like mine have rubber patch on the front) to protect from rocks and such. you should check out Keen though. they only make trail shoes

I know the feeling. I didn't even look at my pace after I ran trails yesterday. I figured there was no point. You can't really compare it with your road pace. Good job on the trails. They'll really toughen you up, and save your joints from the pounding you would get on the cement.

I feel for you, I have the same IT band issue going on. It really bites. I have been overweight my entire life. Took off 105 lbs by running and riding and now I am having so much pain doing both its tough. I have had it massaged and that helped some but I just can not afford to get it done often enough so I use the foam roller too.

Cont'd: I did this for about 2 weeks when I had really persistent IT band issues once, and it was the only thing that finally worked for me. Whenever I start to feel the slightest issue with it now, I just do that stretch, and it goes away. Hopefully it will work for you the same way. It helped some of my other friends who had IT band issues, so it's worth a try.

Not sure what the usual IT band stretch is? I was shown to cross one leg over the other and then with my arms over my head lean to one side. Kind of looks like a ballet move...LOL Is that what you mean??
