Had just finished up my swim at Peterson AFB Pool when the lifeguard made everyone get out of the water due to lightning strikes within the area. Since I'm not a EE, I though I'd inquire to their rationale. I asked, "has lightning ever struck inside a building?" Response from 1st lifeguard, "lightning can travel through metal into the building." I said, "Yes, but the pool isn't touching the building exterior or supports." Response from 2nd lifeguard, "the pool has metal surrounding it." I responded, "oh you mean the aluminum siding that forms the gutter. It's encased in concrete and not a conductor." Finally, someone walking by says, "it's government protocol" and I nodded yep. Anyway, got back to the hotel and sure enough plenty of folks in the pool. Apparently Marriott doesn't know about government protocol.
