It sounds like you have patello-femoral pain syndrome. It is an inflammatory irritation of the cartilage under the kneecap, and if you google the condition, you should find several links for very effective home-treatment strategies. Usually, you can bring it under control in a relatively short period, and use cross-training in the meantime to keep improving your conditioning enough to hopefully qualify for the running team tryouts. Swimming, biking with a stationary bike with low resistance.

Sarah, you'll get back on form in no time! Just rest up! Try getting into swimming! Maybe challenge yourself to swimming a mile. The new challenge may distract you from not being able to run and the swimming will help strengthen your knee. Hope you feel better!! :-D
