Just got back from the doctor who had the results of my blood tests. Apparently my iron levels are very low which explains SO many things (breathlessness, fatique, weakness, lightheadedness, nausea etc etc) !! All I have to do is take an iron supplement every day and I should be back to 'normal' very soon. HA!

that's great. I should go get my blood work, maybe I have an excuse. Wait all those things ARE normal for me. Seriously I hope that gets you back to normal.

Define "normal"?

Yuck, I hate iron supp.'s. Those sometimes made me feel worse. I was always anemic in high school it seemed and had to take straight up iron. Blech! Hope you don't respond like I did! AND I hope you get better soon!

Guess we've got to have a broader definition of normal for some people :-p
Glad the doctor has the symptoms nailed - did he give you any idea of the cause?

It can be such a relief to find out what's wrong. Hope you're back to super-Karin soon!

I am very happy it is 'just' low iron levels! He couldn't give me the cause Robin. It could be low intake, low absorbtion or high expulsion. I really hope this is what has been causing the rut I've been in the last couple of months. Now back to training!

Good news but don't overdo it with the supplements, if the refrigerator magnets start sticking to you it's time to stop!

Great news! Did they warn you to take the iron WITH vitamin C but absolutely NOT WITH milk and preferably not with food containing phytic acid eg spinach, wholemeal bread (you can find a complete list on the internet)? These all can prevent absorption. I am currently taking an iron supplement, and I find the timing a real pain, especially as I have to swallow it with food as it gives me heartburn otherwise. Good luck!

Alexandra: no they didn't but I found out when I checked it out online. A real pain for me too as my routine is to start the day with coffee and cereal with milk! I guess from now on it will start with orange juice and then wait for a half an hour before I have breakfast.
After reading that I was a little upset that neither my doctor nor my pharmacist told me about this. I could be taking these pills forever without them doing anything if I hadn't know about this.

Indeed! I find this kind of failure on the part of health professionals all too common. Like you, I take to the Internet and try to check everything about my health problems and treatments, as far as my limited knowledge allows. I have many friends who still like to follow their doctors' advice blindly - so much the worse for them!

I'm with you Alexandra. One of the things my dad has drilled in me is to never assume but always check. I have decided to take my iron pills at night with a glass of orange juice. My stomach can handle a lot so I hope that that will work.
