Even worse, after about 7 miles, my left ankle started to hurt.

I think it's because my foot landed awkwardly in an unfamiliar shoe yesterday while coming down the hill.

I tried to keep running until at 13 miles in, the mental energy required to manage the pain was too much, so I ran/walked the rest of the way home, which was not painful as long as I took the walking breaks, and was not too slow. Definitely will stop testing the Altra Kings, which I hold partially responsible. But now I have to figure out what I need to do to get the ankle back to full strength...

Bummer and bummer.... I don't have advice, as you always figured out your own Sutton in the past anyway. Hope that will be the story again this time!

I want to like altras, too. But I have no luck with them. Ankles are tough. Hopefully, it will be a quick recovery!

I spent some time looking at the shoe for an answer, and I found the "rockplate" under the midfoot. I don't usually wear such "protective" shoes, and I think the rockplate is what caused the shock to go right up my ankle :(

I was actually thinking it might be the grippy soles that did not let you slip to relieve the forces.

I remember quite exactly when I felt the shock go through my lower leg. The leg landed harder than I expected because of the hard thing (rock plate) in the shoe. The shock went up through my ankle which was twisting because I landed midfoot on a rock. That twist, and the extra shock while twisting, seems to be the problem.

The soles are no more grippy than my other shoes by the way... they are just "ok" when it comes to grip.

OK you seem to have identified the problem...

Glad you figured out to pitch the shoes...was hopeful you found another great shoe...but that's too high a 'price!'
