good Race up Race 5.8 mi 01:40 17:17 pace

Since the school dropoff takes me close to this trail (which I have never run!) and because the girls had an early music class, I decided to take a quick trip up Race Mountain on the Race Brook Falls trail. RBF starts out unrelentingly steep until you get to the Falls (which I completely ignored on the way up since my head was peering down at the rocks and roots the whole time!)

RBF trail goes up into the hollow between Race Mountain and Mt Everett. Around here, people go up Mt Everett more, since there is a kind of road most of the way up. But when I had the choice on one mountain or the other at the AT junction, I decided on Race, because I remembered that ridge being actually prettier.

Even though from the AT junction it is no more than a mile, it feels longer (of course). In the hollow, the sun goes away, even though it is rising still. Once I see that the hill is no longer blocking the sun though, I get excited that maybe I'm almost on top. And then I laugh - either I am rising above the hollow to meet the sun. Or the sun is rising, you know, like it does, when it gets later in the day, and I'm not getting anywhere? :)

Anyway, I make it to the top, take photos, and turn around quickly, because it is cold today (19ºF in the valley) and windy on top.

On the way down, I can finally tell that the strengthening exercises I've been doing on the muscles around my knees, after Grindstone, are working. Much more consistently strong downhill form. But still slow :)

For that pace, for you, it clearly was quite the hill!! Glad you got to explore this at last.

Impressive elevation profile! Nice to have this in the neighborhood, so to speak.
