My initial suggestion would be to get in the pool and get a feel for swimming again. Assess how you feel. Coaching in swimming is highly recommended although I've never taken a session :(. I also suggests listening to swimming podcasts, triswimcoach is a great one (you can find it on iTunes), also there is a wide range of youtube videos out there. Look for those on swim specific drills, Dave Scott (6 time Ironman Champion) also has quite a few on there i.e http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYt8x_7uL48 .

That's as good a way as any. My guess is you are already faster than me. Once you build a little endurance, you are going to love it. Running is my favorite, but early in the morning there is something about the pool that is very relaxing and fun. I know Alex agrees.

I'm laughing because I can't imagine your basis for guessing I'm faster than you? (I can swim 25m pretty fast, but after 50 -100... let's just say I'm glad the pool is only 4 feet deep...) You guys are posting 400m times. I don't think I've swam/swum/swimmed/whatever that far in my life! (Unless you count floating leisuring on my back in the current of a river!)

Thanks Anh. I'm writing off the pain as minor aches and pains since they went away when I stopped running and didn't come back this morning, even though I was moving a lot faster. That said, I think it was indeed a good decision to stop the run - it might not have stayed "minor" had I pushed for another mile!

:) @ Slapnuts! I just like whining sometimes! I feel about 25 years old, to be honest. But I do get injured easily if I try to run more than 5 days a week. Sometimes, but this one (and most of them) was on a treadmill. It doesn't help me to learn pacing, but it guarantees I hit the desired splits. For 800s and mile intervals it's not too bad. It gets annoying for 400s, and it's completely obnoxious for 200s, which I do sometimes for 5k training. Track access can be a challenge. I know running clubs that get access for groups, but then I'm subject to their schedule. Weather is a variable outside as well, obviously. So the treadmill, while monotonous, works!
