Registered for my first ever Parkrun, the London Marathon organisers set up 5k park runs all over the UK for anyone to enter, they are at 9.30 every Saturday morning, you are racing against your own time in this run, 122 runners this morning and I came in at a slow 39th place. This is the first time I've raced with so many people and I found it was rather intimidating as I'm more a solo runner, they seemed to shoot off at a fairly fast pace which I never do but by the half way point I had passed quite a few of the sprinters, I normally take around 4k to get my breathing settled and with this run so short I never really got into my stride at all, I'm just not a fast short distance runner, if I had another 5k I may have done better. As it is I'm not impressed with myself what so ever, I keep thinking how will I do in the 10k in 3 weeks and the half marathon in 12 weeks, At least now I know what a race pace is. I have a lot of work to do until then. one last comment, It doesn't make me feel any better about my run but a lot of the runners at the front pack were all running and Athletic club members which explains their 17.2 mins 5k

ummm... 754 pace? WOW! I think you should be really proud of that! 5ks seem like a whole nuther world compared to distance folks... like apples and oranges. I think you did fantastic!

That's a wicked pace, James! I don't think 39th is bad at all!

Today was the first ever Perth park-run :) I've put participating in one or two a month on my 2013 goal list.

Nice to see you enter a parkrun, James. They're a nice break from the long runs etc, good to see progress over time.

Good of you to know yourself James. Don't work yourself up over something that is not important to you. If shorter distances are not your thing, do them for fun. Nice pace on this run, even if you weren't impressed with yourself.

Not bad at all, but from following your training, I see you more as a long distance runner as well :).

James, that's an awesome 5k time! I do tend to see you more as a distance runner, but the occasional 5k is fun. If you stick with it, you'll get used to the "pack" and you'll improve. You did great today!

Holy cow James, you were awesome! I agree that you'll prefer the longer distances and watching all the other runners fizzle out when you're just picking up steam!
