I had an agreement with myself that if I ran this race slower than 4:40 I would take a recovery week from running as people smarter than me have been urging me to take more than a day or 2 for the last 2.5 years and I haven't listened. Today I realized while I recover fairly average...one week between intense races is not enough...even if they are not both ultras....I think on fresh legs if I didnt do tybee last saturday I couldve ran sub 4:25. My legs were hosed after mile 15 and I promised myself that I would tough it oout even though it was not easy or that fun slogging through it. I think I gained some strength running on tired legs and probably more importantly wore myself out to the point where I need a break rather than just opt into one.

It was a great workout, though, and with some time to let the training effect do it's magic, you'll be better for it. But you do have to let it soak in. Meanwhile, that's a great effort on pooped legs!

Congrats! I think I burn myself out by 20 miles every time I do Holiday Lake. It's too runnable! :)

As for the back to back weekends, I think you can get to the point where you can do decently well, but you'll always tell yourself you could have done better at one of the races if you did only that one...

Amazing that you managed that pace over 33 miles. I PR'd for a 4 mile race at the same pace yesterday and had nothing left at the end. Wow.

No doubt a strict two week taper would have done wonders. I think that ultrarunners, especially fast ones like yourself, can do well, but not ideal with back to back weekends. We are not all Michael Wardians. This was a mistake I made a lot in 2008 and 2009, thinking I could do a "casual" marathon the week before a 50 miler, or 50k and think it wouldn't hurt the performance. Live and learn, but a 33.3 miles run at 8:28 pace is a good training run for something bigger.

Nice race! Haven't run HL since the original course which was accurate and had a lot of road and was run in the summer! Long time ago! Yeah folks can run back to backs all they want, but if you want to maximize your potential you must not race too frequently. 2 weeks is definitely not enough time between hard efforts IMHO. Eyes on the prize always! Figure out what's most important and make that the focus, everything else is just training and filler but not 100% effort.
