A bit disappointed and fed up with yesterday's run. I planned to run each HM at around 1:55 or 9 min pace and taught given my training I should easily manage that but I knew after about 5 miles that it wasn't going to be my day. My legs were very heavy and I had no energy at all, feeling very drained and tired. I was taking on fluids and nutrition but whatever was up, it was going to be a long day. After the first HM, I decide to drop the pace down even more to around 09:30 pace and carried on until around mile 37 (after the monster hill) where I pulled something in my right calf. I stopped and tried to do a few stretches but it didn't work. So the final 2 miles felt like 10 and I hobbled over the line. My calf feels OK today but I haven't tried running on it and won't for a while. I'm glad to have completed the ultra of course, would I do it again, 'Yes', so it hasn't curbed my appetite for more. My only advice to anyone thinking of doing the ultra in Connemara, try the marathon first so that you get a good idea of what the hills are like, especially in the last HM.

That's a savage run - well done.

Sorry I missed you on Sunday Fran. Well done on persevering through the pain. That last HM is hellishly tough with 26.2 miles already in your legs. Nothing can prepare you for the 2 mile hell of the west. This was my third outing and I still wasn't prepared for the pain it brought.

Nevertheless, good work Fran. It sounds as if you really dug deep at the end.

you are being a bit hard on yourself fran though i can understand your frustation. a ultra ain't easy. pat yourself on the back, have a few beers and come back next year.

what would you do differently in terms of training and racing?

Yes I need to look at that big time (I'm open to advice), feeling knackered after 5 miles is not good in a race like that.

maybe too much tapering? i am wondering because i felt in rome i tapered off too much. i also felt i should have rested more during the week leading up it and defo carb loaded more. also the heat may have been a factor for you? just ideas!!! still tho running 39 miles is serious stuff
