good Negative Splits 5.2 mi 00:48 09:16 pace

Pace run scheduled for today. Even though it was shortish run, I wanted to try to get negative splits around my hopeful marathon pace. I was going to try 9:20, 9:15, 9:10, 9:05, but consistency is clearly not my strong suit. 1 mi slow warmup (11:05), then:

9:28
9:02
8:31
8:14

Avg: 9:16. Not sure what to think. It wasn't an all out effort (maybe 3.5/5), but i find it difficult to maintain a fixed tempo. This was on a trail, but a pretty wide area in most spots, mellow elevation changes. Now onto oatmeal-cinnamon waffles and my son's 4th birthday! Loooooong run tomorrow.

I'd say you crushed that workout. Throw out the warmup and you averaged 8:49 by my math and each mile was progressively faster.

Thanks for helping with perspective, @Mark. Sometimes I can feel reall improvements in endurance and tempo, other times, I think I need to talk myself into being content with simply finishing. Still not sure what I signed myself up for. @Marybeth, waffles count as carbo-loading right? And heavy frosting kiddie birthday cake?

yes, very tasty carbo-loading..the frosting is the wrapping for the package, after all, it IS a birthday party!

i share your perspective re: improvements vs just finishing. i'm not sure i challenge myself enough re: a pace.
