It was 85 degrees and humid as hell at 8:00 tonight. I can't take the heat! My running app. screwed up on me - I thought I'd run a mile, but I was a little short. I'm jazzed abou... read more

So, it's over....my first 5k. My official chip time was 48.21. I got a side stitch just into the 2nd mile and had to walk a little bit. Gah! I'm disappointed in my time, although I... read more

Dawn, way to go for your first 5k! I saw your question on how to increase speed. A very good way to increase your pace is when you are running pick a quarter mile (usually good to do it without hills first) and double your pace. Run hard (but not to the point of exhaustion) then drop down to your normal pace or even below it. The key is to change up your pace; you will find that your "normal" pace becomes a lot easier and your "fast" pace becomes more normal. Allow yourself to build up it takes time.

Congrats on your first 5k! And... the Swamp rabbit 5k is REALLY hard: hilly, crowded, hot, etc, etc, etc. You did great for that being your first race!!

Dawn- the best part of running is that the only person you truly have to compete against is yourself! FEW people will ever "win" a race, and frankly those elites are usually much more welcoming and encouraging than those random middle of the pack people that seem to have something to prove (and feel the need to make comments like those).
I am SO proud of you, and I truly hope that you keep running for years and years to come!

GOOD LUCK! Just remember it doesn't matter how fast, how slow or whether you run or run/walk, race day is all about you and your goals. Enjoy every minute of it!

Hey Dawn, if you haven't yet, make sure you get a tech shirt to run in. Will help keep you cooler in this humidity. Good running and keep it up.

Yea, you sort of have to expect great runs and bad runs, it's part of being a runner. And yes you are a runner, you became one after W1D1 so no point in getting intimidated by other runners. Just focus on your workout and what you need to accomplish because they are probably focused on theirs. BTW, you're doing great!

You're doing great! You'll have good runs and bad runs it's all part of the game. Eventually they'll all feel pretty good. Just keep going. : ) My earbud wires drive me insane! I've ripped them off my head several times because they annoy me. Some days it's the shirt I'm wearing, I refrain from ripping that off though...thank goodness. : )

Yep, agree with Erica and Jess. I just got back from a bad run myself. Whenever my earbud bothers me, I just take the one out and leave the other one in.

Skull Candy earbuds, I rarely have to adjust them (and I'm picky about stuff like that)!
And you are a real runner! Every runner starts exactly like this...simply making the decision to do it and seeing it through, that's what makes a real runner. So excited for you Dawn!
