There was more wind then I would have liked today for the Tempo run and rather then talk myself out of it and delay it a day I figured I would just get it over. Little did I know that today would turn out to be much better then I expected. Plan was 14 miles with 6 tempo miles @ 6:30 pace. Ended up averaging 6:17 (6:26, 6:18, 6:16, 6:23, 6:19, 5:58) and the final 3 was against the wind and I felt comfortable the whole way and after mile 5 I noticed I was catching up to a couple riding there bikes so I decided to pick it up a bit and pass them. The puzzled look on their faces was priceless and I don't think they were expecting a runner to pass them. The last mile being under 6 was the first sub 6 that I have ran in a long time and it was against a stiff breeze. I took about 30 seconds to regroup and finished up with 7 miles. Ran moderate for 5 and ran the last 2 at MP (6:51, 6:48) just to get a feel for it on trashed legs as they were tired at this point. Actually felt ok and the pace was not an issue at all. The hard stuff is done until the weekend and now I can have a nice couple of somewhat easy runs just to get miles in. Overall extremely pleased with how the quality sessions are going.

I bet that couple was confused! Really great work, David.

What a great run for you! Beyond solid tempo miles with a sub-6 and then a really strong finish. Dang, you have to be very happy with this run. And I love the Tempotastic title. May have to steal that in the future...

@Sarah G. When I came up on them I got this double take as I think they thought it was another cyclist coming past them.

@Marcie Maybe I should trademark it really quick. I am sure that I stole it from someone. I am a numbers guy and my creativity is about zero.

@Mark W. I am really pleased with how the quality sessions are going. I am also glad that I go on taper in 2 weeks after this week as I know the gravy train will come to an end soon.

That sub 3 hour will be a given!

Great job - I'm not at all surprised you had that sub-6 finisher in you with a little extra motivation - great job getting this one done. I also suspect you have more of a sub-3:00 in you than you realize...

@Greg S. I am getting really confident on a sub 3 run. 6:50 pace is feeling really comfortable for me and doesn't scare me anymore. I may target 2:57 or 2:58 but I don't want to get greedy and at this point just get the sub 3 in then go from there.

I think your strategy is sound - I settled in at 6:45 pace target last year and ended up finishing 6:41.

Peak-tastic! A marathon is NEVER a given (IMO) but you look super sharp lately... just hitting these MP/temp runs really well. Super excited for the race :)

@Stefan I couldn't agree more with the marathon not being a given. That is why you need to have fear of it and respect it. I would rather have a 2:59:59 at this point and say I could have gone a lot faster then just over 3 blowing up questioning myself for the next 6 months.

One of my favorite past times is demoralizing bike riders. Way to go, David, you are looking so, so strong. This is great work, and you are more than ready to rock this race. I'll be SHOCKED if you don't run a bit under 3.
