Race fees seem to be getting out of control. I don't mind paying a little more for a long trail race considering how much they provide at aid stations, but still, all races have gone up substantially over the last several years. Is it the large volume of runners and the difficulty organizing such an event? Is it the obligatory finishers medals? Are race organizers getting greedy? It's annoying, whatever the factors. Running and racing occasionally used to be relatively affordable!

As much as they might claim otherwise, I think it is the extra stuff that they add that is unnecessary. I'm sure the Afton people would claim that they needed a tricked out website, extra shirt options and cooler finishers medals, but that all just adds to the cost. I think I will just run the race with my own support on a day separate from race day. I might miss out on the camaraderie but I won't miss out on the beautiful scenery. My Afton money will just go toward my Moose Mountain fund :)
