So my intention today was to run most of this at MP. Met up with Carrie at the bike path in Alexandria & ran towards Granville & then back. I am trying to figure out what my MP is & would love anyone's input. I was thinking an 8:45 pace. I told Carrie that & bless her heart she really tries hard to slow down, but we hit 8:43 ONCE! I warmed up for 2 miles before she got there. Mile 1 was 9:05, mile 2 was 8:45 (right on the nose). Mile 3 (my first mile with Carrie LOL)...8:25. From there we stayed pretty consistent with an average 8:30-8:35 pace. I felt pretty good throughout the run. My legs were a little tired, but I also ran 12 on Monday & 7 yesterday, so that's to be expected. I really started to feel fatigued at mile 13. But mile 15 was my fastest at 8:15. Carrie thinks my MP could be faster than an 8:45. I'm pretty conservative & don't want to bonk in the end, so I'm thinking 8:45 is pushing it & I'm probably better at an 8:50 ish. I don't really know. I feel as though I've never really "gone all out" at a marathon. My last 2 were ran conservatively with no pressure (having just come back from injuries). I really want to push myself with this one coming up, but not so much that I end up failing at the finish. My best 1/2 marathon time is a 1:48 & I think I could go faster than that now. Thoughts anyone?

Have Carrie pace you at your next marathon--at least the second half of it. I guess it's a good thing I'm still sick, I would never have kept up with that this morning! It seems you always run like that when Carrie is with you so it stands to reason that you would run that way when she's not during a race...it sounds to me your marathon pace is 8:30.

If you can handle 15 miles at a pace on a training run on tired legs, then that pace is achievable in a marathon (though, depends on the hills of the marathon). Really strong execution!

No Deb it can't be that fast because I was toast at the end of 15...no way I could hold that for another 11.

I'm far from an expert, but for what its worth (fyi - I think of us as being the same ballpark in terms of speed and endurance), my marathon pace last time was about 10 seconds slower than I ran most of my MP runs. The way you describe 8:30ish is about how I felt on those runs. Keep us posted on your decision process.

Good luck trying to figure it out. I am trying to figure out the same thing for myself. If you have any suggestions let me know :-). Awesome job with this run!!

You are ready to break 1:45 in your half and when I'm healthy we are going to do it. As for your marathon pace, why not shoot for the 8:45 pace and then if you go a little faster at the end it will be a bonus. I think you are capable of faster, but sometimes putting the pressure on yourself takes it's toll.

I think that's what I'm shooting for Dave!

I'm with Dave. Stay conservative until you know how your body feels for that run. When you know you have enough to get through the end, push it. As for a half speed, you are going to easily hit 1.40 or 1.45 with all of the work you've been putting in.

I agree with Dave on the 8:45 strategy. That being said, based on all of the running I've seen you do over the past year+, I think you're at least capable of 8:20-8:30s once fulled trained and tapered. I think if you start out with 8:45s you'll end up with plenty left in the tank to finish strong. Are you planning on doing a half en route to Toledo?

Fantastic run this morning, btw :).

Thanks everyone...Jen, no I do not plan on doing a half before Toledo. That requires more speed work & I learned my lesson last summer. My pt told me to pick my distance & train for that only to help ward off injuries. I would like to do one after though. I just mentioned my half pace because sometimes you can predict your full pace from that.

It's clear that you are going to crush any of your prior marathon times, so I say don't worry about it & just go into it & run however fast your body feels that it can go that day (there's always factors to consider; current health & injury status, terrain, weather, esp. wind or heat, stomach issues, hydration, sleep) Anything can happen or change so why put any undo pressure on yourself to run a certain pace? You know you will qualify for Boston, you've already ran a 4:00 full & you're way faster now!

and how way cool that you have someone that wants to pace you in a race & help you to a 1:45...lucky!!!

Thanks Deb, you're right that many factors come into play on race day. I'm not putting pressure on myself, I just dont know what pace to run at when I have a MP training run.

I'm excited for you! You are definitely going to pull out an awesome time. I'll be asking you for training tips in the future!

Gotta go with what feels good. If the 8'35" seems to work for you but you feel you want to go 8'45", then run your natural pace and don't be afraid to take it easy from time to time...walk during a drink break, or slow down to eat. I'm contemplating the same thing and am thinking I'll be tying 8' miles as MP but then allowing myself the luxury of these mini-breaks...especially late in the race, so my average pace will probably be closer to 8'15-8'30". Just a theory, but I've got a good feeling about it

Sorry I missed this post earlier I have been crazy busy. I feel like Andy S. I think we are close in pace and distance except that I think you are a little faster than me. That said I am counting on doing a 3:45 or very close to it with my upcoming marathon. That is just under an 8:40 pace. The training program I am using says I will run at 8:18 pace but I do not think that is realistic for me but I do think an 8:30 to 8:40 is realistic for me and certainly for you.
