Decided to run without music today for the first time in years after reading a friend's post. After one lap around the neighborhood, all of the sudden I heard the pitter-patter of feet behind me. I spun around to find a German Shepherd about 10 feet away and charging! My turning around scared him enough to stop about 4 feet away and start barking. Then he circled me a few times and kept following me as a walked away. Seemed he was just going to keep stalking me and not go away. I was just about right in front of my house, so I just decided that this happened for a reason and I'll just make up the miles later with Kim! Felt great, and the silent run may have saved me from a nip on the leg! 1.76 miles, time 20:19, average 11:34, 273 calories.

Nice run Chuck and I'm glad you didn't get bit. I've never ran with music, I like to know whats going on around me. Happy Monday!

Love animals but hate when a dog comes at me. That will get the adrenaline going! Good to run another day!

Close call. Maybe he/she wanted a pacer? Everyone has a different idea about music. I'm mostly with Jason. No music unless it's a long run

Those dogs scare me, I'm sure they are great, but they've been used for years to tear people up-no thank you. Glad you survived the run. Good luck w/ the make up miles, I think it's great you two are running together!

One of the reasons I almost never run with music. The few times I bring music, I feel like I have to be extra vigilant for cars and animals. Your awareness definitely helped today.

Scary moment! I had a face-off with a German Shepherd in January. Glad you made it unscathed, thanks in part to no music!

Glad you didn't have a worse encounter with the dog! Nice run!

wow that sounds SCARY! Any dog can get your heart pumping but a GS? This is one reason I carry mace on ever run. Glad you're fine!!

Wow! Good call cutting the run short! I always run with mace so I can stop 4- and 2-legged attackers.

Yikes! Good thing you heard him. My neighbor told me if a dog comes at you point your finger right at him and shout "GO!" I tried it last year when a scary dog came into my yard where my 2 little boys were playing and it honestly worked, I couldn't believe it. Nice run despite having to cut it short!

Great that you went w/o music Chuck!! I used music for a while but it is way better w/o. Kim and you enjoy your run later!!

That does work, what Lynn said. Just don't look them in the eye, they take that as a fight. I carry doggie treats with me. No music, there's bear and mountain lions where I go...need to be on the alert at all times, sometimes I scare myself.lol! From a distance a downed tree in the right position can look like a bear standing and looking at you :) So glad you didn't get bit!! Happy running later with Kim!!

Yep, I carry pepper spray just in case...and only run with music during "well traveled" times. :) Nice running!!

Wow...never thought about it...I always am plugged in:) But I keep it low enough and use ear buds....so I can hear outside noise, traffic, etc. But not sure I would have heard the dog behind me unless barking..something to think about...glad it worked out in your favor....Happy Monday

I am digging the no music runs now too after yesterday's event. I am more aware of my surroundings. Make sure you got your ninja skills up to date for those dogs. :)

lucky you heard that dog today, sometimes when I'm running and a dog passes me I think "if I get bit, I'm totally going to get to stop and take a break", then he passes me and I wonder if it would be worth it.

No music for me either unless its a super long run. I've had dogs come out of their yard, cross the street and chase me.. Sure makes one run fast. :-)

Not such a bad thing to go without music - especially when it allows us to be aware of our surroundings. Nice run, Chuck.

I should try the no music thing sometime. If I'm outside, I run with one earpiece out...there are too many dogs that run wild in my town.

Wow, that was a close one!!! I run w/out or w/ the volume way down around my neighborhood for the same reason. My husband and I were walking when a dog came after us, or I guess I should say me, because I guess he decided I was easy picking since I'm so small. My husband stayed between me and the dog, yelling and screaming for what seemed a long time, the owner came out, yelled at the dog and went back inside. No apology or nothing, crazy!!!

I go unplugged every now and again as well. Never race with it. Oh if I had $1 for every crazy dog I've encountered while running I'd be a rich woman, but I will tell you this, I've only been bit once - I learned to out crazy them and never got bit again!

One of the reason I stick to running on my TM. I'm afraid of too many things...4 legged and 2 legged attackers, crazy drivers, getting hurt and no one finding me, etc. Guess I'm a little paranoid...and the heat doesn't help. :)
