Caleb M. daily coaching tip: ...

Track and share your training!

Dailymile makes it easy to keep track of your workouts. Map your routes and share with a community of active people.

Daily coaching tip: TWO nights before a big race is the important night, not the night before. This is the night that you want to have your big carbohydrate meal and get to sleep early with no alarm set for the following day.

Why carb load 2 nights before? First, the glycogen stores will have ample time to actually get stocked from the meal. Second, and more important to me, is you won't feel bloated on race morning from the gorge-fest.

Why go to sleep with no alarm 2 nights before? Because you're not going to sleep well (nervous energy) the night before. Write race eve off as a fitful night, but allow your body to decide how much sleep it wants to bank 2 nights before naturally.

Awesome, great advice CC! What do you recommend eating the night prior, then? Standard well-rounded meal?

@Candace: Yea, whatever. I always eat a burger and drink a beer or 2, just for tradition's sake.

Which confuses me when races offer (day before) pre-race carbo dinners!

Totally in agreement. I try to get a good nights sleep 2 days out because I know I won't sleep race night.
