Think of it as training. That will help. I once had 14 months of physio, three times a week, after breaking my hip in a cycling accident. Keeping my spirits up was really tough. Once I realized that I was simply "an athlete in training," I was able to keep going.

Daniel and Alan, thank you so much for your support and empathy. I have to remember that this is a time I'll look back on as a learning experience - an opportunity to get to know myself in these moments of down time. And there are other ways to move my body besides running - at least for now. :) Thanks!

David, I'm so glad you like the podcast! There's a podcaster named Chris (RunRunLive) who says laughs that he's sometimes so close to calling it quits with his show and then he gets a note saying how someone loves it. I'm only just beginning, so I have no plans to stop, but Chris' words articulate how rewarding it is to get a note like yours. Thank you! :)

Yeah, I would think so too, Caity. Might thing of the scratcher as a threat. How does he react when you come close & give him treats?

When he hears my voice and sees me going into my pack for a treat, he doesn't bark. But sometimes he'll get pissed if I get up too quickly or if I just stand there watching him or talking to him without giving him treats. When that happens I just leave. My Save-This-Being gene goes into hyperdrive with this guy. No animal should be in this situation.
-
I agree... Makes me think of my neighbor. Whenever she leaves, her dog barks his heart out until she returns, some 8 - 10 hours later. I have contemplated to call on her... Another dog friend of mine who volunteers @ a shelter told me not to. The next day she approached me & asked me for advice! I was so happy she did & brainstormed along w/her. It has gotten much better d/t her training w/the dog. I am relived to see it. But your dog?! Dunno what I'd do.

I'm curious about why your friend thought you shouldn't talk to your neighbor. It's great that she approached you, since a barking dog is often a bored, frustrated dog. And a frustrated neighbor. ;) I'm glad it's gotten better. I think I'm going to simply keep sending him love and giving him little snippets of connection/treats. It's all I can do... though I fantasize of stealing him. LOL He'd probably bite my head clean off and then kill my children. Ha!

Marc, let me know if you have any secrets about that... do you think people who can sleep shorter lengths of time are eating foods perfectly suited for their body - or somehow having more effective sleep (deep, like you) - or something about metabolism or energy? Maybe if I slept for 5 hours a night for a month my body would adjust.(?) Because now I'm with Melanie and Michele, I just feel so tired during the day otherwise.
