Ok. The good news is, I ran 13.1 in 2:05 without even trying hard. So to reward myself I decided to walk mile 14, since I had to make it to 22 miles. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. My back cramped up. It ... read more

I came to pretty much the same conclusions after my marathon. I decided for now it is easier for me to work on getting faster at the half then to keep pushing distance. Great pace and distance though!!

thanks. i've been struggling with the decision to get faster or go further. I know I don't have enough time right now to train the way I should for long distance. The 50K is in less than a month, and I feel like I'm just throwing myself into it.

I agree. I don't go out before sunrise or after dark either. A run just isn't worth the risk when our children are our priority! I even stopped running in snowy, icy conditions too b/c I wondered how I would manage with a broken leg, etc. if I slipped...That's when a TM comes in handy!

I hate running in the dark, but I do it. Only in our neighborhood though, and I wear a reflective arm band. I love that it gets light earlier now and I don't have to do it!

I run in the neighborhood occasionally right before sunrise for a couple miles, but I wear pepper spray with a reflective velcro strap on my arm. But running past the houses that are under construction freak me out. I always worry someone is going to jump out of one of the porta-potties by the road or come running out of one of the empty half-built homes.

What kind of socks are you wearing? I have found when I wear cheap socks that aren't made for running (just like Haynes or something) I will get blisters if I wear them on a long run.

It could be your shoe or even the fit of your shoe, or like Kristine said my first thought was socks. Do you have a running specialty store close by where you could take your shoes in and ask them?

Probably the shoe or size. I got a black toenail once when I started distance running. I increased my shoe to 9 and it never happened again..(I am a 7 1/2 to 8 shoe for all other activities) Check it out at a running store.

I wear thorlo Experia socks but I think I will try another brand to see if that helps. I'm wondering if the front of my foot is wide so I will stop by fleet feet soon and see what they say. I hope I don't have to switch shoes! I'm on my third pair of my favorite NBs. Thanks for the advice y'all!!

I have always heard every 500 miles. At least that is what they told us in high school cross country. I don't know what hard core runners do.....but in a year I am training and running a couple of races, I typically do every 6 months, which is probably about 500-600 miles for me.

I'd base replacement on actual shoe condition rather than an arbitrary mileage...if the sole is worn away, worn badly one side or the other, or compressed with little or no "give" or cushioning effect remaining, out they go. BTW, my therapist DOES NOT like those shoes being advertised that literally have springs embedded in the heels. I also think they're just a gimmick. You have no idea what the spring rebound rate is and what would be correct for your or some other runner's weight. My 2 cents... : )

i rarely run on anything other than pavement, so I would imagine my shoes will get worn out more that way vs. dirt. I also have a really high arch, and need the extra arch support. Fleet Feet tried to sell me some pricey inserts one time, and I wonder if those would give my shoes a little extra life. But I'm cheap so I passed. :)
