Okay.. so starting about 17 days ago .. I started to eat differently, (fewer calories/more healthy food), .. and a minimum of time on my walking machine .. I know a lot of it is just water weight .. but I am down a solid 10 lbs. When this picture was taken I weighed 162. Then I gained it all back ... up to 189. Now I'm down to 179. My goal is to lose another 20 pounds. I have also rejoined my fitness club .. I love to fool around in the water .. I don't really swim, .. but I do burn energy in the pool.

I can definitely relate to the internal thermostat thing! Most times when the temps hit the 80's, you'll find me on our treadmill in the nice cool ac. As for the diet thing, yes, I lose more weight when I am the most careful with what I eat but I do sometimes "cheat" with some of my favorite goodies.....just not all the time. I know you'll be able to figure what works for you! And we all support your efforts! :)

I am a southern girl so I have always walked outside no matter the heat. But if my allergies continue this way, I may have to move it inside. But it definitely is easier to workout if you're comfortable, so do what feels best for you! Eating healthy is always harder when you first start. I have cheat days where I can have some "bad" stuff. It definitely is hard, and you're doing great! It takes time to find your groove or right place. But like Kathy said, we're always here for you!

I have found with age, I can't tolerate the walks outside as easily when it's above 80. I still do them, but find that I'm short of breath and of course, sweating more, which I'm sure could be considered a good thing. When the humidity hits, you'll find me inside with fans turned on high so I don't miss out on my walks. Dieting...never easy and around here, we try not to use the word diet, but instead life style changes. And I agree with Kathy and Alicyn; we all cheat at times! Keep up the great work

Quality of life. That's what it's about for me. If you live to 62 but can't move beyond your easy chair and you joints ache all the time, is it worth it? My weight is a little high for a runner, but because I'm so active I can eat more, but I still have to eat smart. Portion control is important but so is not denying yourself treats. I used Sparkpeople.com to lose weight, they really helped me learn how to eat better. You can do this!

I agree with Bert on the cravings. Old habits die hard (and do they ever go away entirely?) so the best we can do is just try to do better the next day and not look back or beat yourself up about it. :)

    Question for runners ....

If a person walks 4 miles and another person runs 4 miles. Is it only the time of the task that is briefer as the advantage (?) Or does running require more calories for the same length ran ? Tha... read more

I have looked into this too and found you do burn more calories running a shorter distance than walking (you don't have to run very fast). However, for me, I sustain more injuries running especially at faster speeds. So far in just 6 mths I've had a sprained ankle, runner's knee, and now nagging hip pain. As soon as the injuries get better I restart the running anyway. Love it! Good luck!

Running definitely has benefits. Bone density is improved by the repeated impact, you burn many more calories, cardio vascular function is improved by the higher stress. Injuries can happen but if you keep your workload down and do strength training (not necessarily weight training) along with the running your injury risk is lowered. Most people (like me) get hurt when they try to do too much - too fast.
