great Long run 21.46 mi 03:28 09:42 pace
Long run in vff bikilas / barefoot. Had to move the long run to Friday so drove straight from work to the start of the Ultra route. Had an OS map and compass, the route on the garmin and on my phon... read more

Those OS maps are awesome, but they're not cheap. I also have the bad fortune of living on the northern border between the Leicester and Loughborough maps, so if I want them I have to buy two!

I was using a printed low res map from the race website, which was OK (They issue higher resolution ones on the day)
The free Maverick phone app has great OS maps but my GPS position was way off & the garmin line map was very useful but kept disappearing at certain zoom levels!
Between all three it was fine, but I'm glad to be running the route before the event!
I believe you can have a custom OS map printed where you specify the centre. Might work out cheaper and more convenient than two maps?10 days ago • Like

I looked at that, but it ended up costing the same as two of the normal maps on eBay. Figure I might as well get the two and cover more ground. The Garmin 305 is alright but the path is only so useful without any points of reference. I find the OS maps have so much detail, it's really easy to find the way, which is just as well. My compass skills aren't as good as they were in my Boy Scout days.

great Easy Off Road 6.17 mi 00:58 09:25 pace
Ran in vff seeyas. Kept heartrate below 150 on the flats and slowed / walked any inclines to maintain a sub 155 heartrate.
150 seems to be the point where it starts to feels like work!

Awesome run, even if it wasn't quite the time you were hoping for. I dig your choices for food. Simple but effective.

Thanks Joshua. I've been avoiding gels (apart from the two marathons) to try and adjust to eating food and running. I can't imagine running for 6-7 hours on nothing but sugary gloop!

Had a pleasant chat with a lady about being barefoot when I arrived at the leisure centre, and another with a runner on leaving the leisure centre. Then had some abuse from one of the lads in a group half way home. Hopefully I'll get to see them all again next week!

I do periodically get abuse from teens, but most seem to just gawk. It's usually kids who speak up... "Mummy, that man has no shoes." My favourite was, "see! I told you I didn't need shoes!"
