Lots of rain last night made the trails a bit muddy, and for some reason I didn’t feel like fighting the mud this morning, so I left the narrow path, cut across a pasture and picked up the pavement of the two lane country road on which I live. The usual morning traffic whizzed up and down Hyde Road, and after cresting a little hill, I saw something in the road ahead. As I got closer, I saw that it was a turtle making his slow, determined way across the road, oblivious to the cars crossing his path. I scooped him up, ran down into the woods a few yards and directed his efforts in a safer direction.

Back on the road, I ran on, thinking about how that turtle is like us: we forge ahead on our way in life, toward our destinations, thinking that we know everything we need to know. Sometimes we don’t.

I’m not sure what the moral is: I guess it’s all about free will - make sure you know what you need to know before you try to cross the road. Don't expect the Big Hand to save you when you screw up.
