good Bad Apple 6 Hour Timed Lap Ultra 36 mi 06:50 11:23 pace

Bad Apple 6 hour ultra race in Greenville, MI. Well this one went pretty well! I am really in love with this distance. I will have a more detailed blog on this race later today, I will post a link to it. All in all a very strong race for me. This was basically a 50K. You would run a 4 mile loop and repeat this loop as many times as you could in 6 hours. I did 9 loops for 36 miles which is well beyond what I have ever accomplisdhed in 50K's previously. If you made the 6 hour cutoff you received a bonus lap that counted in the totals. I was first in my age group beating my cloest age group runner by 8 miles and I was, Yes! 2nd. overall. A younger 22 year old or so runner beat me by 35 minutes but I was never lapped. I met the winner after the race, this was his first ultra ever, super nice young guy. I had some loops that were terrible like loop 3 which was miserable then on lap 4 I felt like superman. As other ultra runners know, with that kind of mileage, it comes and goes. The course I was told was PRETTY MUCH flat. You know what happens when you here that? It was not flat. No real super huge hills but continuous rolling and you ran many of the miles through an apple orchard which is a new type of surface for me that is very hard to run on. Those weird roots, branches that extend away from an apple tree and those were covered by 3 ft. of grass will cause a tripping problem because you cannot see the roots so I had to remind myself to lift my legs over and over after 20 miles that is not EZ to do. A great course, a very well run event, aid stations were plentiful. Ben and his staff did a great job, very friendly people as usual in an ultra race. Today I am sore in the knees but I am asking myself if this really happened. I stepped it up and it paid off. Thanks to Salomon for some nice running apparel. PJ
