Easy Run (70% of MHR) 8.41 mi 01:25 10:07 pace

I had read that If you've never measured your heart rate while you run, I can almost guarantee that your “Easy” pace isn't easy enough.

Well I had to reasonably long runs this past weekend so I decided to do an easy run based on 70% of my maximum heart rate. Wow! that was so slow for me - I hadn't run that slow in 3 years.

Has anyone else done this before? It is supposed to aid recovery from harder runs but I am not convinced. I'll tell you, I actually found it quite hard staying at that pace :)

I feel the same way at times Karl, it's really tough to slow it down. I read a number of factors can throw off your heart rate so that might account for the discrepancy.

I like this approach but is someone's max heartrate really 220-age? I thinking may have really over done a lot of my runs if that's the case...

Done a little hill running earlier to get my MHR. Turns out it was 165 which is much lower than I thought.

I've recently seen MHR - 45-50 to be a good goal for easy runs - if yours is 165, then that's scary. If it's more on the order of 180-185, then 135-140 would be an appropriate easy HR, which is what I usually achieve the few times I've measured my HR on easy runs.
