Went out a bit too fast and so my last mile was a lot slower. Any advice for building up speed? I'd like to be able to maintain a 5min km over 10km for my next race.

This pace is good. To improve this figures need a lot of previous training. Look for specific training programs, but be aware, improvements on speed usually carry out lose of endurance ( and viceversa).

There were some patches I could jog and some I definitely had to walk. It looks like it's thawing out so hopefully the next one will be better.
