Rob if you know the chainring and sprocket sizes of your old 9 speed triple and obviously the new compact sizes you can gompare the gear ratios and inches by using Sheldon Browns gear calculator. here is the link
      http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/
You can then compare the two sets of ratios and see how close to each other they are

@Angee, the dogs were funny. When they got close it was like the were waiting for me to stop and play with them. Hilarious, except one of them almost got hit by a car, whose driver wasn't paying very careful attention. But a fantastic ride. I'm really enjoying the added weekly distance. To think I started the year out riding about 220 miles a week with 4 hill climbs for the whole week. I'm now up to 270+ miles with about 15 hill climbs. My average speed is up about 3 to 4 mph. I'm pretty happy about it.

The official numbers just came in for the West Valley Cycles group ride that I participated in yesterday. There were 60 plus riders. The "A" group average speed for the first stage was 26 mph (in the hills)...24 mph for the second stage (slower due to headwind). No wonder I got blasted off the back end. Now a battle of words seems to be developing between West Valley Cycles, the premier group in the west valley, and BOS, the premier group in the east valley. Who is the fastest group?
