James & Krister, thanks. I know we're all suffering from the unseasonable wind. @J Pierre, thanks, I do think it's better to back off when the run really isn't happening, hoping to save something for another day. @ Diane & Maryanne, thanks a lot for the good wishes.

Sleep deprivation keeps me out-of-whack! Regular traveling between time zones and getting calls from Australia at midnight, Europe at 3:00 am, make many of my days groggy. When I'm home, I almost always sneak in a 20 minute nap, and that seems to help. Maybe that'll help you? Pineapples and strawberries sound delicious!

James & J Pierre, good idea about the blackout curtains. @Jullia, are you sure they are aconites, not celandines? I ask because I rarely see aconites, whereas there are celandines all over, including in my garden. Diane, I've noticed, you're totally heroic. You're right about the naps. Sometimes I nod off sitting on an upright chair at my kitchen table and even that helps. (Lying down in the day is risky as it can lead to agonising bloat.)

Thanks, friends. @Natasha, I'm like you, easily over-heated, & can't run at all when I'm too hot. @James, sorry you've been getting the wintry spring too. @J Pierre, a maid service sounds lovely except I'd have to tidy up!!! And even clean to make things fit for a maid. @Drago, I'm so spoiled - since I'm retired I can have a lunch-time run AND a good meal as well, if a bit late.

Actually, maid services have seen it all; some of them charge more for the first visit, then less afterwards. Cindy worked for one for a while just to help out her girlfriend who owned the business, and would tell me stories... you cannot possibly have a place as bad as some of those places she had to clean. I mean, it's not possible.

Ines, the Cooper Institute says 120 per month http://www.cooperaerobics.com/Health-Tips/Prevention-Plus/Your-Prescription-for-Good-Health.aspx
I'm not sure where I saw the higher figure. In any case, the 120 points are for good health, not for additional fitness. I see the targets I set myself as being purely for motivation rather than having any validity in themselves.about 1 month ago • Like

Ines, here is an expansion on the Points system: " Acquiring between 27 and 40 aerobics points weekly is a marker of "Good" health, according to Cooper. "Excellent" health is indicated by achieving 41 to 64 points per week, while "Superior" health means you've acquired 65 points or more". Interesting!.Room for progress there.

Sheep are very companionable and apparently on testing the scientists were quite astonished how intelligent they are. They recognize people quite readily by their faces, among other surprising things.

J Pierre, that's fascinating about the sheep recognising human faces. Many of the sheep we have here in the north of the UK are very like wild sheep, quite capable of managing on their own without us.

It's that tricky time of year with regards layers, hey? Interesting to note the difference a couple of degrees of latitude makes: daffs nearly over here, tulips about the burst forth :) Glad you're feeling comfortable extending the distance. Oh and I agree with you that DM rounding-up is annoying and unnecessary.

Thanks, everyone. Seems we're all agreed in disliking the rounding up. @ Ape, I'm amazed you have tulips. Not a sign of them here. @Peter, yes, the rounding up is a small niggle, connection with my DM friends is huge. @Diane, I tally my miles mostly on paper. I have a huge desk diary which shows a week to an opening AND a calendar that shows a month at a time. I post my exercise on BOTH. AND in my 5 year diary, so I can compare what I was doing on this day in past years. It's very motivating.

Interesting observation about pace levels. I certainly find that in a race, I often run 2 to 3 minutes per mile faster than during training at the same perceived effort. Once again, it brings to mind one of my favorite running quotes, "running is 90% mental and the rest is in your head". LOL

I wish I had a Garmin that made me go faster, is that a new version he he, here's me thinking you were getting the better weather down there, we had a glorious day today, rain tomorrow though :(

Doug, I have realised that I run faster in a race partly because my conscious brain tells my unconscious that this IS a race, but also because I see the others running and immediately want to keep up / pass. Even in training, seeing other runners or even walkers makes me want to speed up to compete. @Chanie, glad you have the same experience. @James, one day soon we'll have wireless Garmins with footpods that force our feet to go at the required speed. Could be disastrous - like the story of the red shoes
