Melbourne Marathon. That was very tough!

I thought I wasn't go to finish more than once in the last 15km. My quads started to feel really sore way to early. They were in pain around 60 minutes into the Marathon (I hadn't felt this before on my long runs at a similar pace).

Averaged 4:48 pace for the first 28KMs. Once I hit the the 29km mark I had to slow down to avoid cramping. Had several muscle spasms. It was frustrating as aerobically I felt strong. 31-35KMs were completed in 5:18 pace. In the last 6KMs I had to slow again to avoid cramps in my quads, hamstrings and calves. Every time I tried to lift the pace I would cramp. The last 6KMs were completed in 5:50 pace.

It was the best feeling to finish inside the MCG and see my wife and two children waving and screaming from the stands. So very happy to achieve this.

Thank you everyone on DM for the wise words and encouragement.

It was my first marathon .... but it will not be my last. Yes, I have been bitten by the bug.

Great job Adrian - sorry about the leg issues but more often than not that ends up being the limitation - great time on your first marathon (in fact - nearly identical to my first many years ago)!

@ Greg Agree. It takes more than a solid 12 week program to properly prepare oneself for a Marathon. Many lessons learned. I will come back stronger. Your amazing improvement is something to draw some inspiration from.

Wow Adrian - I am very impressed. You did amazingly well for your first marathon. Yes, you had some issues but you pushed through. You are very strong and determined. You are going to only improve over time, as you said, you learned many lessons. I feel the same and cannot wait to race a half marathon again. Awesome performance!!
