This nice plaque came in the mail this morning. You can have one too - provided you're 40 or older and a USATF member. The Phidippides Award is a masters' participation award based on points accumulated by running road races of various distances.
Wow! A silver medalist! Way to go.
1 day agoWOW! You are a winner! How many hours/months/years or points does it take to earn this award?
I would love to earn one! Do you have to be a marathoner too? Do half marathons count towards long distance?
Thanks Tom and Cindy!
Cindy, more details are to be had at this link:
http://www.usatf.org/groups/RoadRunning/PhidippidesAward/index.asp
Longer races are worth more points. A 5K is worth 1 point, a 10K is worth 2 points, a half marathon is worth 3 points, and a marathon is worth 4. The points you need for gold, silver, and bronze varies by age group. And you don't have to be fast; it's entirely based on participation.
about 2 hours agoIs this your first award? I just sent the link to my running friend who is having her big birthday next month! Mine is next year!
We will be in a new runnning bracket.
142 sit-ups and 18 push-ups.
Well, I've got Achilles tendonitis and won't be running for three to six weeks. So, I decided to try the 100 push-up/200 sit-up challenge again. (I sort of lost interest the first time I tried it.)
I figure it can be par... read more
Sorry about your tendonitis (ouch). Hope you make a speedy recovery. You've found a worthy substitute in the push-up sit-up challenge.
1 day agoGreat!!! I love the push ups!!!
1 day agoGreat work! I feel for you, and so sorry you will not be able to run for so long. Hang in there!
about 5 hours agoEasy pace run: Six in Whitesburg. My first run after some time off to rest a sore Achilles. It still feels a little stiff, but there's no actual pain.
Hang in there.
5 days agoYou have been working that baby! How many miles on your shoes?
5 days agoWishing you continued improvement.
4 days agoMarathon-specific Speedwork: 2-mile warm-up;
4x1 mile @ 5K race pace with 0.5 mile recoveries;
2-mile warm-down.
Great pace for that distance, John!
14 days agoI asked a question at the race forum, you posted an answer that was a tremendous help, but I couldn't reply your answer. So here is a big THANK YOU!! I will take your words to the Hosptial Board of non-runners and let them know, from what looks to me, a very experienced runner. I started competing last year, so many things are important to me at a race. I have to take out the (I & me) and really find out what the audience would like to see at the event. That was a big help! 10 days agoEasy pace run: Five with some strides.
One of the benefits of my job is that I can take one or two courses for free each semester. This past fall, I took human anatomy and physiology. So now, I can very precisely identify the fact that I've got some p... read more
Very nice run John!

15 days agoLong Run: Seven counterclockwise laps around Fish Pond Lake, plus some backtracking to bring it to an even 18 miles.
This was an interesting run. Today is my birthday; I'm officially in the M45 age group now - with all the fast masters runners in the ... read more

15 days agoWeek 1, Day 1
Push-ups: 10, 12. 7, 7, 9. Sixty seconds rest between sets.
Sit-ups: 21, 27, 21, 21, 30. Sixty seconds rest between sets.
Two minutes rest between push-ups and sit-ups.
Same as my W1D1, John--I started in Level 3 based on the initial test, but I just barely made the nine in the last set! I'll continue to follow; I'm interested in how closely my experience with the program parallels with others! Good job! Hang in there! It gets tougher!
18 days agoEasy pace run: Just some trotting about.
0.03 miles short of a quarter marathon! Nice run, John!
18 days agoGreat pace John for just trotting around!!! Great way to get in some mileage.
18 days agoNice trotting John!
18 days ago15 push-ups
83 sit-ups
This is the "initial test" for the 100-pushup/200-situp Challenge program that I've heard so much about. And so, 83 sit-ups and 15 push-ups is actually all I can manage! I'll plan to start the real thing on Friday, and... read more
Your going to do great with the push ups and sit ups!
20 days agoJohn, you are right where was before starting; I did 16. The program seems to work; I'm up to 50 now, but had to repeat Wk5 to get there. I anticipate Wk6 repeat(s), because I just don't find it likely to go from 50 to 100 on an extra week's training. But I don't mind it taking extra time. I haven't tried the sit up challenge, and decided one at a time! Good luck!
20 days agoThanks so much for the encouragement, Michelle and Vern! I'm looking forward to this little experiment.
