Road or trail, or both - what is your favorite running shoe and why?

  • Personally - for trail, the Cascadia's rock my world. I do play favorites with Brooks because i am sponsored by them, but it was this particular shoe that brought me to the brand. I also get to weartest the shoe for the company :-)
For road, my tempo/pace runs are well spent in the Launch and for distance i'm currently trying out the new Glycerin 8 - although it may be a little too cushioned for me.
If i had to choose another brand outside of Brooks, it would be Mizuno - the Wave Rider fits me well and never had an issue.

  • I use the la sportiva wildcats for trail. Lightweight, great traction all seasons, toe bumper to help protect and they are seamless. Been using them for 3 months.

  • I use Asics Cumulus, and have for several years. They work for me, and I've been able to run with only infrequent problems / small injuries with them. They're good for my high arch. I'm interested in trying out other shoes for more specialized things, but it's a hard thing to swallow, dropping around $100 or more for a shoe I'm not sure I'll like, especially when it seems I'm able to run on any conditions successfully with shoes I do like. I'm sorely tempted by the Vibrams though. Man.

  • I've been running for 2 years and have not found that perfect shoe yet. Just picked up a pair of Launches, but won't be able to try them for about a month! Ack! Before I got injured I was alternating the adidas Supernova Glide and Mizuno Wave Rider for mid-distance to long runs and the Mizuno Elixir for shorter, speedier stuff. I've also tried the Adrenaline, Infiniti, Nike Equalon, Mizuno Inspire, Saucony Omni and for trails, the Salomon XA Comp 3. Some were better than others, but none really "wowed" me. :-) Still looking! I'm hoping the Launch has that "wow" factor! I also want to try the Cascadia.

So you liked Gore-tex, Laura? I have the same Salomons in both Gore-tex and non-Gore-tex. I find my feet get very hot and clammy in the Gore-tex shoes unless it is pretty cold out. The other problem I have with the Gore-tex is that once water gets in through the top of the shoe, it stays!

I still haven't found the perfect shoe. I'm not sure anyone really makes shoes for people with feet as wide as mine. I think we're more of an afterthought. make the shoe then make a wider version. does anyone make custom running shoes? not that I'd be able to afford them, lol

  • Trail- After a year of experimenting I found the Cascadias and don't think there can be anything better.
Road- Brooks Trance and Asics Kayano.
I'd love to eventually say barefoot.

  • Road-Asics Gel Nimbus, although the toe box is smaller now than I remember. Might need to try some other Asics. I also like Saucony & really want to try the Kinvara.

    Trail-Asics Trail Sensor
