Calories

So, the class I go to is power vinyasa. I looked it up online and found that 60 minutes burns about 425 calories for a 135 pound person. Does that sound accurate?
I definitely do get my HR up, and I'm sweating like a mutha, but that is the equivalent of running 4 miles!

Just wondering.

  • I agree with you, it sounds like a lot. I often don't trust those calorie calculator or even the ones on the machines because so much depends on your personal workout. For instance, when running, I'd assume the more you swing your arms, the more you burn, but the calculators online or on the treadmill can't tell how much you are swinging your arms. I'm sure it's the same as the power vinyasa. Some classes are going to be more intense and burn more, and the more you put into it, the more you burn. I tend to not count that kind of thing (yoga, pilates, etc) as part of my traditional calorie-burning workout. Instead, I consider it more of a strength workout - for both mind and body. Then if it is burning extra calories I'm not counting on, great!! I just did a quick search and my-calorie-counter.com lists 430 calories for one hour for 135 lb person (I used the same stats as you listed to compare), so unless that's also your source, perhaps that is accurate? I'd like to see how they are calculating that just out of curiosity.

  • Yeah, I actually did check a couple of sites when I saw the number. It's consistent!
In any case, I love it and I get an awesome workout from it.

  • Yoga ranks low among other activities when it comes to burning calories but it gives you a sense of well-being immediately after the session. Running is a sure-fire calorie burner!

  • I'm with Maya on this one- I don't count it as a workout to burn calories. It has definite advantages other than that though so it is well worth it.

  • I also don't see yoga as a way to bun calories, lose weight, get pumped and that stuff. I use running for all of that and swimming, biking and so on. Yoga is the quiet place in the storm, a way to care for my body, be gentle, compassionate and careful.

It's not a workout, it's working on yourself.
