I'm basically new to yoga. I have a couple of poses that I do each day to stretch. Do you take a class or do you have a favorite DVD of yoga? Looking for some guidance.

  • I found some great resources in the video podcasts directory in itunes.
YOGAmazing is pretty good. It started real small and indipendent and like everything else, it grew into a small business for the guy. But it is still pretty good: http://www.yogamazing.com/

There is another that is more like a slide show. It's "ok". http://www.YogaDownload.com

Rodney Yee probably has the best instructional videos and yoga videos. I went to the library to got a few of them (free!). http://www.YeeYoga.com

One of our group members, Kitzzy, has an amazing post with a ton of Yoga resources!

She updates it every now and then. Maybe we could get her to post the whole thing here! ;)

  • I take classes from a set of twins who are about to open up their own studio which is why they're free classes right now =)

I had never done it before, so I used www.iyogalife.com a lot when I got home to familiarize myself with the poses.

  • I do a combination of classes and at home with CDs. I do my classes at Yogawood in Collingswood and I love it (my business is right across the street so very convenient). I have a CD at home that I use when i don't have the opportunity to go to class. I like the combination because it allows for flexibility (no pun intended) in my schedule and I never feel like I HAVE to go to yoga because I can practice at home if I want. I never want to feel tied down to a schedule, because I always want yoga to be an enjoyment rather than a task or chore :-)

  • I just finished doing a 30 minute Yoga for Runners workout from yogadownload.com. It's an audio workout, but you print out a pose guide that goes along with it. The flow was nice, and the instructor (Dawnelle) was great. And right now, their 20 minute workouts are free, so I just downloaded another runner's workout, as well as a detox flow and a hip opener. Check it out, bendy friends!

  • I want to share a Yoga DVD I found for the kids. It is called YogaKids, from crazy to calm. And I was very skeptical, because my kids are not calm. But, they do enjoy yoga, stretching and exercising, so they really got into this program. We all had a lot of fun doing it. It was fantastic to do before bed. I definitely recommend it!

  • I second yoga journal.

I recommend reading "Bringing yoga to life" by Donna Fahri.

I practise Ashtanga. In this type of yoga, there are series that you follow. You are given the next posture when you are proficient at the one you're at. Each posture prepares for the next so it makes sense to me.

It also has the side-effect of developing acceptance for where you're at, both in the series and in life!

  • It is ideal to do yoga under qualified instructors as they can immediately give you corrections and show you proper techniques. Then you can supplement this with DVDs as you go along. Then later you can be independent with just the DVD in order to save money.

  • I originally tried Yoga to fulfill a Physical Education class requirement in college. The teacher was awesome and I loved it but I pretty much stopped after that class and didn't go back for years. Now I go to classes at the University gym and have occasionally gone to a studio. I've never tried a video but I am going to get my own mat soon so I might try it then.

  • I practice at a local studio. It's a great time for me to reflect while in my poses. I'm not very discipline to take my practice home. Occasionally I do...

I've been practicing little over a year now. The best therapy...

  • I joined Gold's Gym in San Francisco and can get in yoga 5 days a week. $30 a month gets me 20 classes so if you do the math you will see that it is more cost efficient than a yoga studio. Amazing quality yoga instruction and I can go to gyms all over the bay. Cutting down yoga because I am tapering up for my marathon. Yoga has reduced injuries in training, developed core and a centered state of mind.

  • I used to teach and could probably provide a lot of recommendations for you, both videos and local studios. What type of yoga class do you think you would like? One were you are constantly moving and working up a sweat, one where you hold each pose for longer periods of time (e.g., 5 min), or one that's more gentle, but doesn't require you to hold poses for a really long time.
