Shin Splints

posted over 2 years ago | Report

Anyone have any tips on how to deal with shin splints? Mine vary from a slight twinge that I can walk off to something that hurts so bad that I have to stop. I stretch and warm up before my walks, but sometimes I get them and sometimes I don't.

  • I think there is a lot of information online about it. I've only had a little problem with shin splints a few years ago, and if I remember correctly, stretching beforehand and icing afterwards was supposed to help.

Of course, I just got lazy and stopped running for six months, gained weight, and had everything else hurt more than my shins when I started running again.

  • Just talked to a buddy about his shin splints, and he echoed the stretching and ice, but he said he got better shoes with more cushion, and that helped him as well.

Swimming and other non-pounding exercise probably would help as you recovered.

  • This might be a little late, but if you're still having pain it might help!

I had debilitating shin splints when I first started out. I always thought I just wasn't built to run. I asked my dad (lifelong runner, marathoner, etc.) and he said it's really all about stretching and strengthening your calves. So I started stretching my calves before, during and after my run and it's really helped! If I felt pain during my run I would pause the treadmill and do a quick calf stretch. It really helped and now I have a lot more endurance. I would google some calf stretches/exercises if you're not sure how to do them properly because form is important to stretch the proper muscles.

Good luck! Hope you're feeling better.
