Great article about eating less meat

"Going almost vegetarian, while allowing a few specks of meat here and there into the diet, is good for Mother Nature."

This is the start of a short article on Serious Eats about reducing meat consumption. As my mentor, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau says:

Don't do nothing because you can't do everything.
Do something -- anything!

  • This post makes me think of Michael Pollan's book, the Omnivore's Dilemma. He broaches the question of what we should eat and how much from a purely nutritional, health, and environmental perspective. It's a great read, if you haven't checked it out before. He followed it up with a much shorter, to the point book (not nearly as interesting, in my opinion) called In Defense of Food, where he tries to answer the question, "What should we eat?"

    Highly recommended, imo.

  • Another good book to make you think about food is Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. I bought the book because I like her novels (especially the Posionwood Bible) but Animal, Vegetable, Miracle is about one year her family spent trying to eat responsibly / locally. It also includes recipes.

  • Wow! I have come so far! This is from a girl brought up in cattle country & my grampa was a dairy farmer in Montana. Just the photo on the article of raw hamburger made my tummy upset! Yippee!

    I liked this article too~

Wow, again just thinking how I used to chew & chew & chew a steak for a meal... It's amazing
    what a choice will do.

Very happy not ever eating a "speck" of it! Not a speck! :o)
    (my body is too!)

  • My wife and I have recently converted to "some" meat to hardly any meat. Just yesterday in the market she commented on how nice it was to walk by the meat aisle!
