Shoes

I've been running in Asics Gel 1130's for the past 255 miles (nearly 100% on road surfaces) and am thinking about getting a new pair. Not sure the old pair need to be retired quite yet, but I've heard it's a good idea to buy a new pair and then alternate between the new and old for awhile. I've been given different advice on the number of miles you should think about replacing your running shoes. Either way, I definitely think I'm going to do the whole gait analysis at Paragon or JackRabbit Sports before buying a new pair. Just wondering what everyone else has found in their own experience. Any advice?

  • The people at JackRabbit should be able to consult with you, although I've never shopped there, myself. I don't recommend Paragon at all. Their staff are not very knowledgeable or helpful. Your other options, that I'm aware of, are Super Runners Shop (there are a few -- at least one on the UWS somewhere on Amsterdam and one on the UES on Lexington in the 80's) and The Running Company in the Time Warner Building. This is the one I've been going to.

In other words, go to a *real* running store, not a general sports store. I also don't recommend going to a single-brand store, like a Nike or Adidas shop, because you can't know what brand you need until you do the gait analysis and talk to an expert.
