Can I hurt the fetus by running therefore getting hot?

posted almost 2 years ago | Report

I would love some advice about running and being pregnant to make sure I don't hurt the baby. I know a lot of the regulations on working out are for the mother but I can tell when I reach my limit. I just don't want to overheat the baby by running. I run/walk (doing the C25k workout) for about 30 minutes building up to a 5K in Sept. I run/walk in the morning at about 5am so it is not to hot yet. I am 7 weeks along. Can I essentially "cook" my baby? I know they say hottubs are bad due to the heat so I am worried about running and getting hot. Please help, I am really worried and really want to continue my training.

  • I ran nearly all the way through my pregnancy, and it helped me feel really good. It also helped me stick it out through a tough labor. I would just check with your doctor, and then just make sure you pay extra close attention to your body. Drink a lot of fluids and don't be afraid to call it a day if you're not feeling up to it. But I did run/walk intervals until three weeks before I gave birth, and everything was okay. I did make sure to consult my doctor, who said that since I was running before I got pregnant, continuing to run would be fine. Once you make it into your second trimester, you will probably feel more at ease with exercise. I found that to be true, anyway.

Sorry for a delayed response...just reading through it now. Not sure if you got your answer yet, but here's some info. Feel free to review my workout postings. I found that to be helpful this pregnancy. I had my 3rd baby in July. I ran basically the entire pregnancy, including the night before my csection. You will not harm the baby, but you could cause a miscarriage. Your body heat should not go above 99.9. A temp above that in the first trimester sends a message to your body to activate the immune system and reject the pregnancy. A heart rate monitor is helpful and important. You should talk to your OB about an acceptable range. Mine told me that they usually tell patients to keep it under 145-150, but b/c I have been running forever anyway, 160 would be an ok max for me. Good luck on the 5k. My first postbaby race is a 5k tomorrow...

  • That is really cool that you, Kmc and Jamie, were able to run so far into your pregnancies. Kmc - the day before your c-section -- wow!

I'm 30 weeks and still running and am curious to see how long I can make it. I'm going to take it day by day and not be disappointed when it's time to stop. I made it to 31 weeks with my 2nd pregnancy, so I'm hoping for another week...we'll see.
