When do you run?

posted over 2 years ago | Report

I am a SAHM to a 5 month, a 2 year old and a husband who works funky hours. Though my gym is 24/7, I am finding it hard to consistently work out. My husband doesn't want to wake up early with the babies (yeah, I know) and by the time he gets home, I'm too exhausted to go run (after 9pm).

How do you find time to work? I think I just may need to use the gym daycare...

  • My husband doesn't work funky hours per se, but long ones. He usually leaves at 7 or 7:30, and often isn't home until well after bedtime for the kids. I have a treadmill in my basement, and log some miles that way, even at naptime for the baby if I have to. My 3 and 4 year olds are trustworthy to keep their distance from the treadmill.

Lately I have been doing all my working out somewhere between 5 and 7 AM as I don't like my training to cut into my day. Life is just so busy for our family, as for many families. It bites, but that way I am sure it will get done. I do use the gym daycare occasionally too, but this winter my kids have been sick off and on which makes it hard to do that.

Also, my five kids are 9, 7.5, 4.5, 3, and 1.5, so believe me I do understand the struggle to schedule! Mainly, I have just learned to be flexible. Different things work at different stages for your children, and sometimes things just vary from week to week!

Best of luck figuring it all out. I am sure you can make things work out. I think things are always trickier when you have a baby under the age of 1 in the mix.

Thanks for the response Kristin. Wow; 5 kids (bowing down). Don't know how you manage. I'm pulling my hair out with "2 under 2" right now. But I think you're right: once she gets a little older it will be easier to manage a good schedule. I may just have to have a little bit of coffee for that 10pm run :-)

Don't shortchange yourself. "2 under 2" is really hard. I think I struggled more then than I do now, even though there is more going on for me at this stage.

You officially become a mom the day your first child is born (or the day you first received an adopted child), but it is a role you continue to grow into for years. As my Grandpa says, "Just keep the faith." :)

  • Woah, when I see someone with 5 kids making it happen I think I should be able to figure this out:) I only have one 19 month old and trying to find time with one can be difficult so I hear you! I definitely utilize the gym daycare and nowadays I find that if I want to get a shower getting to the gym is the only way I can do that. Never in a million years would I have thought I'd get up super early to workout but that's the only time where I don't feel guilty for letting it cut into time with my son or other things I should be doing. Can you get out for a run before hubby and kids wake up maybe...

  • Yes, I've heard from other moms that this stage is really the hardest and that once they get a little older things will be much easier.

Motherhood is constantly evolving; new and different challenges every day!

  • Oh Katy, I hear ya on the shower part! LOL.

I've tried doing runs in the morning when the baby is still asleep, but apparently she gives my husband a really hard time when I'm not there. And she's exclusively breastfed at the moment which adds to the difficulty. (Though I need to start working on that seeing as how I have 2 races next month!) I think I'll definitely start using the gym daycare once I know she'll take the bottle.

  • Hi Alisha,

I am having a similar problem but not because of the funky hours. I am the working mom of a 9 month old and find that by the time I get home, spend time with my baby and husband and then get him down to bed I am totally exhausted. My original goal was to lose the baby weight by 6 months ( I know, not realistic) but now 9 months after I had my baby boy I find that I still have a nagging 10 lbs. We acquired a used Treadmill and am have started to go down and run 2 miles every morning. Another idea is if you have any down time in the evenings ( say watching some TV) you can fit in calisthenics.

    Good luck with your workouts!

  • I usually run during my son's nap time. My husband works from home, so I set him up with the baby monitor just in case my son wakes up. Usually I can get in up to an hour, plus a shower, without having to have my husband do much of anything. :) Some days I run with my son in a jogging stroller if he isn't sleeping well. Good luck!

  • I try to get in in whenever, so that means usually no schedule. If the kids are set up with something and i think they will be entertained for at least 20 minutes, down to the basement i go. Also, i set up a toy room and a tv in the basement. I dont think that 30 minutes is too much to ask for the kids (7,6,4 and 2) to entertain themselves. Also, stroller-stroller-stroller. I use it all spring, summer and fall! Also, on weigt training days its not uncommon for it to spread out all day: push ups set here, lunge set there.... until its finally all done!

Go easy on yourself Erin. You're working outside the home and caring for an infant and that's tough work! I didn't really lost those last nagging pounds until around a year with my first.

Doing little workouts while watching TV is a great idea :-) Thanks!

Oooo that's nice! I think once my 5 mo old's sleeping patterns are a little more consistent, it will be a lot easier.

Yeah, I think may have to give up on the idea of a set schedule right now (though I thrive on routines). Unfortunately, I don't have access to a treadmill in my home so with the exception of running outdoors (which I'm *not* doing since it's winter in Chicago and I hate the cold lol) I am relegated to the gym. But I am sure there are things like core work and some yoga that I can squeeze in.

  • I must admit I have been using my health clubs childcare center more than I use to, but then again, that is why I joined this particular health club. My daughter is 3 1/2 and she really enjoys the childcare area. I have given myself permsion to not feel guilty about it, I am showing her that fitness is important. In the summer I run with her in a jogger, sometimes we only go as far as she wants to go, which often isn't as far as I'd like to go, but it is still more than many mom's right?

    Keep it up!

The daycare center is a big reason I joined this gym too. It would help not to be restricted by my husband's work schedule. However, my husband has reservations about me leaving the kids there. Well, not so much the 2 yo but my 5 month old. But I may not have a choice. Getting back from the gym at 11 and then waking up 3 or 4 times in the middle of the night and waking up at 6 are really taking a toll. (Especially since I gave up coffee.)

  • Before both boys were in daycare I would use the gym short term daycare center. We are members at the Y and the staff there are outstanding. Now that both are in school, I either get up two hours before they wake and go for my run or I run right after I drop them off for school and then head to work.

I am a single parent of two boys ages 9 and 5 by the way.

Awesome tip on the weight training! I'll have to find ways to incorporate that through my day like you do. Seriously great idea.

  • I just started back up last week. I have a 23 month old, and a 12 week old. Good times indeed! I also started back at work 2 weeks ago... Ugh. So, I run at night. Hubby is in school, so he's studying at night and mans the monitors while I take the dog and head out after the kids are in bed (usually by 7:30/8ish). I'd prefer a daytime run, but hey, I'd also prefer to win the lotto and not have to go to work... ;)

If you tell yourself you have to do it, you will find a way. And to the mom with 5 kids. Hats off lady!!!! I want 3, but 2 might be all we get!
