Challenge - 6/21-6/27/2009

posted over 2 years ago | Report

I really like the idea of a weekly challenge, but obviously not much is happening here.

I think a simple one is in order to ease back into things.

So... for the week of 6/21-6/27/2009, your mission, should you choose to accept it (and you BETTER!) is to venture out of your comfort zone a bit. If you typically are a treadmill runner, go outside for a run or two. If you already run outdoors, but stick to the same route - pick a different one!

And... the topic for next week is this: Why do you continue doing what you do - be it running, cycling, walking, dance, hula hooping, etc? What about your "go-to" activity keeps you coming back for more?

Hopefully we can pump some life into this group. :)

  • Not a bad challenge ... out of the comfort zone!
I began my newest training cycle last week by going all the way back to the basics. Really basic ... as in working on form and breathing for all my runs last week and this week.

Going back to the simple beginnings and concentrating on them intently (being my own worst coach) has been harder than I thought it would. I highly recommend that anyone starting up their training for a fall/winter goal race should go all the way back to the ground rules for their training in the first two weeks of their program.

What's the worst it could do? Improve your training?!

  • I'm an outdoor runner. The treadmill absolutely bores me to tears. So, I'm going to attempt changing up my route for EVERY run this week. Which is only three, but still. ;)

As for the topic... I run. I started running because it seemed like a good thing for my bestie/boyfriend and I to do together. So, we both started. We're now training for the half marathon portion of the inaugural Kaua'i Marathon festivities. And we've joined with A-T Children's Project to raise money for their cause, so we have even more motivation to keep us logging miles. Even without that, though... I do it because it helps me be a better version of myself. I do it because, while it's physically challenging to me, it's a mental challenge as well. I don't love it - don't even like it. I hate pretty much every step. And I still don't ever want to stop. I suppose you could say that I'm passionate about it. :) And maybe I'll love it someday.

  • Glad to hear I'm not the only one who hates running, yet continues to do it. I'm still new to the running world - i just started running consistently a few months ago, but am now running at least 3 days a week. Every time I run, the first 10 minutes are the hardest to get through, and once I hit the 10 minute mark I start the countdown to when I can stop running. I'm finding it's an absolute mental game. Yet, despite how much I dislike every step I'm forcing myself to take - I continue to run because I love how my body feels afterward: stronger and like I can accomplish anything. (and the fact that it's an effective weight-loss tool doesn't hurt.)

I hope this Weekly Challenge group can get back on it's feet - it'll be nice to have a new goal/challenge to work on each week.

  • I'm primarily a treadmill runner during the summer months because I'm not a big fan of heat, now I'm at the Victory Base Complex in Baghdad Iraq where it's an oven (120+ days). Last Saturday, my normal rest day, the Signal Corps had a 3.5 miler around "Z-Lake" and then up signal hill (very steep incline for a half mile) to the finish. The run started at 7AM when it was already 96 degrees. I'm used to running longer than that on regular days inside, but that run killed me. Did over 12 the next day on the treadmill, that was easy in comparison.
