Exercising with Vibram FiveFingers

Calves are killing me! Love these shoes though!

Just ran for the second time in my Bakilas. Am only able to go about 1.5 miles each time and man my calves hurt! I am trying to run in my Vibrams a little bit on my off days. Did 13.1 miles yesterday in my old running shoes. I love wearing these Five Fingers. Hope I can get used to them.

  • how are the vibrams working for you now? i can tell when i am over doing it because my calf will start to cramp. furthest i've run is 5 miles. i got my kso's last april, and got a pair of treksports this week. hoping to be able to run marathon distance this spring.

  • I actually waited until this October to really start my full transition to the VFF’s and I switched to the Sprints from the Bakilas. Now, I just ordered the treksports just like you did so I should have them this week. I have to say my transition is going well. I do less stretching running in the VFF's. I do major calf stretches and Achilles stretches. Also, this may sound odd but I have also become a huge believer in rolling my legs all over with a dough rolling-pin before and after running. This has helped me GREATLY! Here is a link to where I learned this: I roll the HECK out of my legs before AND after a run and it is amazing how good they feel and how fast the recovery time is.

The furthest I have run is 6 miles. If you have only run 5 miles thus far I think I can safely say you are nowhere near being ready to run 26.2 miles this spring barefoot. It usually takes 6 months to a year just to transition to running barefoot full time. Take it slow and listen to your body. Never increase your weekly long run more than 10% from your previous weeks. Good luck and keep me posted. Friend me on dailymile and we can follow each others progress if you want. Good luck. I hope to be running 26.2 with you some day.
