I Run in the Rain

I think it was late winter/early spring last year. I live in Northern California and just this week the temps have dropped into the 90s rather than the 100s as the high. Guess I'll have to wait a while for the rain -- sigh!

Last night. Gustav made it up to Chicago and it was coming down pretty nicely. I ran along the lakefront wit the rain pelting my face and the waves crashing up on the shore. It was sublime.

Still wet from a light rain outside. It's 50 degrees, not too bad for the 13th of November in Chicagoland.

Today! It's pouring here in San Francisco. I'm afraid it might be raining for the next couple of days - good thing I just bought a new rain coat!

Today! The rain had stopped by the time I headed out. Then it started again, just lightly, and there was a beautiful rainbow and sunshine and NOBODY ELSE out on the trail! They just don't know what they're missing, do they?

I did 15 miles today. Light rain at the start, a beautiful rainbow in the middle, and moderate rain at the end. It was awesome! I love running in the rain. I'm lucky to live in California where it doesn't get very cold.
The best thing about running in the rain is the smell of the bay leaves in the air. Yep, the kind you use for cooking. They grow wild here and fill the air with their fragrance when it's raining.

My last rainy runs were on:
- 11/30/08 - 15 mile long run. Cold, rainy and windy
- 12/11/08 - heavy rain, and COLD
- 12/24/08 - light rain, and COLD
- 1/2/09 - light snowposted over 3 years ago | Report

I am just getting back into running again and was lucky enough to be in Guam a few weeks ago. Durring a short jog and found myself in a torrential downpour. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL!

Yesterday... Just a couple of miles. I tend to have some of my best runs in the rain. I'm not sure if it's because it helps to keep me cool, or if it's just hard to be uptight when your doing something that silly.
Yesterday it was around 50 and rainy in Chicagoland. The rain was causing the snow to melt and big puddles were everywhere. Early into the run I caught one and instantly felt the cold water flow between my toes. Didn't have to worry about the shoes getting soaked after that.
My windbreaker and hair were soaked early too. I know I caught a few looks from the passing drivers. But isn't that part of it too?

Today. Nice drizzle. Ran in harder rain yesterday - the drizzle is better. But I love it either way!

Just ran two six-mile loops in the cold rain and now both pairs of my shoes are soaking wet. Big improvement on my single 12 mile route which has no sidewalks. Let's not even talk about the treadmill.

It was pouring down at Emerald Across the Bay this year - did wonders for my time!
Generally, I love running in the rain, but the mud on the trails is another matter...

I just ran in the rain again and let me tell you it was pouring out...I was watching the radar to find out when the thunderstorms had passed. When they did I was out there and getting soaked.

Today, my word the heavens opened! I saw the signs though and wore my old shoes so my new ones did not get trashed, and apart from heavy feet, it felt great!

LOL! I live in the Seattle area, so a more appropriate question is "When was the last time you did NOT run in the rain?"
But let's see...even though this is an old post, I'll answer. Last Sunday I got up bright and early and ran to Starbucks in the rain (Starbucks...rain...did I mention I'm near Seattle?) On the way home the sun came out and it was absolutely glorious!
I coach new runners and EVERY group someone says, "What do we do when it rains?"
My response is always, "We run. We live in the Pacific Northwest. If we don't run in the rain, we don't run."

I ran in the rain last monday (4/6/09) and it was a blast. I have so much fun running in the rain. The look on peoples faces and the obligatory "what the heck happened to you?" after you get back make it even better.

I ran in the rain yesterday it was 43 out and I got soaked to the core. I loved every moment of it except for the last two minutes of my run when I hit a puddle that I thought was shallow...It wasn't.

January of 2008. I had rain on my glasses, stepped on a rock, rolled my ankle and fell. That seemed to trigger a cascade of injuries/illnesses that I am only now recovering from.
That said, some of my more memorable runs (good and bad) have been in the rain. The only time I won't run is if there's lightning close by. That's just a little to scary for me... :-)

Yesterday. 24.39 miles but not all of it in the rain. 47 degrees, windy and sporadic downpours. It was not sublime. That being said it was a tad unseasonably cold for this day in Wisconsin. When it is 80 or 90 degrees in the summer I can't wait to run in the rain. I sometimes wait to run in the rain. Cools me down and there is something else enjoyable about it that I can't put my finger on. Maybe it is how clean the air is. Hmmm. I will let you know.

We RARELY get to 90, but I hear you on the enjoyment of running in the rain. For me it's the way everything smells and sounds. Sounds are amplified if traffic is busy, but in the early morning when it's quiet on weekends...wonderful. I love the sound of the rain hitting the leaves, the birds singing, it's awesome.

Ran in the rain in Lynchburg, VA last week. I logged 15 miles in conditions that ranged from sprinkles to downpours. When I got back I learned that there was a tornado watch in the area. Oops!

About a week ago. Had to get a 11 mile long run in while traveling to Quincy IL. Woke up to a down pour. Got the 11 in and went for 12 just because it was so fun. Getting past the mental aspect of stepping out into the pouring rain and getting soaked quickly goes away because you can only get so wet. Seriously the last two drenchers have produced my best runs so far.

I think my last rainy run was 5/9/09 during a 25K race. It felt great until the rain stopped. Oh wait, I ran in the rain on June 13 as well. I don't think it's rained since then when I've been out for a run. I was praying for rain two days ago when it was close to 90 and humid.

I ran in the rain on July 25th at 2am during the Ragnar Relay NW Passage. Thunder, lightning and my teammates wanted (tried) to pull me off the course. I am born/raised PNW girl, I run in rain all winter long :) I cycle in rain, and I have been known to ski in the rain too!

I ran in the rain tonight! Living in south central Minnesota has its challenges. But I look at it this way. You have to train for all possabilities. What are you going to do if it starts to rain 5 minutes before the start on race day? I also run in my old training shoes if its wet outside. This saves the new "race only" shoes for when it matters the most. This helps keep my new shoes fresher longer, and gives me more use out of the "mudders". Taking both pairs of shoes with on race day is critical.

The last time I ran in the rain was Sunday. I ran 10 miles in 1:31 (new PR) in a misty rain. It was a lot of fun. I run in the rain all of the time. I love the way the rain keeps me cool...and the trails are nice and empty. It is the wind that really gets me. I learned a new technique to keep my feet dry, and I really like it. Here is a link to my blog where I posted pictures...

I know that this is an old discussion but thought I'd try to get it going again. The last time I ran in the rain was during the Runnin' O the Green race in Bellingham, WA. 5 miles of rain, sleet, snow, and hail. It was awesome!
