I'm a huge fan of the Greenbelt. I start at Zilker and run towards the Hill of Life. The route is well-marked, and it's hard to get lost. It has a great mixture of terrain, and a couple places to cool off in a water-hole. Just remember to take plenty of water.

This looks way interesting - where exactly is the Hill of Life though and how do you find the trail? I'm a huge fan of jumping in the water mid-run :)

I've been running down shoal creek trail. Does anyone know of any other trails that are in running distance from campus?

here are a bunch of maps of routes that start/end on campus: http://studentorgs.utexas.edu/marathon/routes.html
(I think most of these are on roads though)
Also, I would avoid running on the Waller Creek Trail, which runs from campus down to Town Lake...this could be a good place to run, but even I don't feel 100% safe down there...i think i've witnessed a few drug deals going on while running thereposted almost 4 years ago | Report

Nah, I've been running the Waller Creek trail for two years. It's perfectly safe; impoverished people, no doubt, but they're friendly and often say hello. Besides, I feel like I should be acquainted with all classes of people in our community people (i.e., good for perspective). If you do feel unconfortable, find a running partner.
So enough of my soap box...Personally, I avoid streets and sidewalks at all costs, and so Waller Creek trail is a great way to get through the city and out onto the Town Lake trail. Starting point from UT campus, one can head south, take Town Lake trail, hook up with Shoal Creek, run up to 29th, find the back trails just past Trudy's, and complete the loop for 8 miles.
Michelle: If you want better detail, let me know.

Actually, I usually go down 29th to lamar and head down the trail to Town Lake, but I always feel I should turn back before I get there because I go in the evenings. I've been running around 4 miles a day, but I want to go all the way to Town Lake. Do you know the distance to Town Lake? I am assuming the Town Lake trail goes to Town Lake. Am I right? And detail would be good. I'm not too familiar with the trail names. I just take that one route all the time. Thanks a lot.

I use to run from 22nd near Guadalupe down the the Shoal Creek trail on Lamar to Town Lake. It was a little under 2 miles to Town Lake. If your coming from 29th, it'll probably be an additional mile each direction. If you need a running buddy at night, let me know, I'm always looking to put in a few extra miles, and I live right off Lamar.

Okay cool. I usually just run on a tredmill if it gets late, but I would rather run outside. Thanks.
