easing into it!

posted over 2 years ago | Report

just got my vibram five fingers this week. i've run in them once (5 miles). i have a marathon in less than two weeks so i am taking it easy when it comes to taking the leap from running shoes to no shoes. wondering if those of you who've been doing the barefoot thing for some time now have any tips about the transition. do you only run barefoot now or do you mix it up?

  • I would love to be able to help you out, but I can not even get my hands on any! They are sold out online and my local 2 dealers are way behind on shipments too. Im too scared to run without five fingers or the like, i stepped on glass a few years back and 10 stiches in my foot arch :)

i got mine last week on a web site called travelcountry.com. shipping was free and they came in about 5 days. think they were last year's model "sprints" but they were also 75 bucks instead of 80-85!

  • I'm no expert, yet. I just got my Vibram's yesterday and tried them out this morning on two short 1.5 mile loops. I was surprised that they actually do give you the exhilerating feeling of running barefoot. I thought my feet would feel muffled in them.

Instead of my soles burning, like they did after barefoot runs, I'm having issues getting used to the heavy material between the tootsies. I thought they would be more of a soft, neoprene-like material. They're going to take some getting used to, but I think I'm going to try to do the next few runs in them, and just go less far. If I get blisters, I'm going to mix it up.

What have you found works for you, Michael?

i have had no blisters from vff use. i did get blisters after going completely barefoot. after last week's 5 miler in vff's i did get a strange little pain in the ball of my left foot. felt it for a couple of days so i haven't been back in them since. trying to heal for next marathon in two weeks. pain's gone now...may run in them today or tomorrrow...still taking it all slowly...although i too want to ditch the shoes completely right now.

  • Wow, 5 miles your first time!? I got a pair of Sprints a few weeks back. I made the mistake of running 3miles in them the first time and my calves were painfully sore the whole next week. I eased up a bit over the next few runs. Now I'm comfortable running 3 miles on the trails, but can only run about 1 mile on pavement before my calves cramp up too much. But my previous knee pain/swelling is completely gone. I love my Sprints, but it takes time to work into them. You definitely need to have patience. How are things working out now that it's been a few months?
