I don't run with music

While I do occasionally listen to music on my runs I generally find running with out it to be more pleasant. As a professional musician, I find it most refreshing to have some time with out music distracting me. I tend to notice the beauty in the area I'm running in instead of missing it while be distracted by the music.

At work I'm surrounded by computers, voices and noises (and that stresses me a little bit!). Running is one of the few moments (together with hiking and climbing) when I can listen to the sounds of silence and re-found natural sounds around me. I can leave free my mind to think of nothing.

Music for me is an annoying distraction while running and becomes extremely tiring mentally. Running is a good way to get in tune physically and mindfully, and for me, music gets in the way of that. It's not from within, it's from the outside being forced in. Very disruptive for me personally.
Maybe with all the talk about barefoot running we'll start to see more and more runners with no shoes and no headphones. Hmmm.

I run to lose myself, to pray, to see and hear nature, to think and as you mentioned to maybe not think but to just run. Earphones just ruin that.
Great group!!!!!!
We can create a list of the songs we didn't listen too. lol ;-)

I find my runs are harder with music. I only discovered this when I decided to go without, once, to concentrate on my breathing. I realized that running without music allows me to focus on my body and breathing much easier, without having to think too hard. My brain just falls in sync, and its an entirely different movement. :) For someone who used to REFUSE to go for a run without her iPod, this was a huge revelation for me! Haha.

I used to run and bike while listenig to music all the time, but I found I hit a wall early on. The music wouldn't let me get into a natural rhythem. Once I took the headphones off I was able to increase my distance and I felt more relaxed during my runs. I'll never listen to music again while I run.

Hey Lora... I saw your post here. I only use my iPod to listen to audio books and podcasts. Music doesn't do much for me. But a good book does.
