walking versus running?

I'm new to dailymile and to the walking/running world......I've done horseback riding, ballroom dancing, and tennis; had knee problems through them all. I've tried running several times with only the success of gaining leg and knee injuries. Is this my que that I am a walker only? Can I still compete in 5ks and marathons if I only walk!?!?!

  • Welcome to dailymile, Alicia! I'm not too familiar with knee injuries, but perhaps it would be best to consult your doctor and see what he has to say about that. I believe you can do a 5k walk depending on the type of marathon you sign up for.

  • Welcome to DM! and club: i walk!
I am dealing with tons of foot and ankle problems/surgeries. I always dialog with my orthopedic to make sure I am not going to reinjure. But i do 5k's. And I am actually working to do the 3day breast cancer walk where I will walk 20 miles each day, so ending up with 60 miles in three days. It's all about slowly testing what your body can take and listening to the doctors. Hope you enjoy walking! It can be a great way to destress and think through things :)

  • So far I've walked in several races. Most have walkers' divisions with their own sets of awards. Generally, most half-marathons will require completion in four hours and most marathons will require completion in seven, occasionally six, hours. Most running clubs have a small, but dedicated group of racewalkers who can have paces of 11:00/mile and 12:00/mile for distance races.
