6 months in Crossfit

Introduced to Crossfit by a friend about six months ago while attending Army Chaplain School. Loved the diversity of workouts, plus after ten years of long running program, monotonous weight routines, 100's of push-ups, sit-ups, crossit was a welcome relief.

Being military, my baramoter is clearly the APFT. My concern is how will Crossfit hold up to the test with a seasoned physical fitness guy who already max's the test out.

I am used to 90 min+ workout days that historically keep me fairly chisled physique wise. However, I have noticed some loss of that in the last six months.

On the other hand, I do think I am stronger and have even noticed a increase in running times for the APFT, can't say that for the other two events but when you are used to cranking out 80 plus and stop doing that I think you do lose some.

Just curious what anyone else is experiencing. I am considering incorperating more running into the program and abvious Push/Sit-ups. But I do like the short workouts!

  • Sounds like you've got an incredible fitness base.. I think Crossfit will only improve upon your strengths. I can't speak to how it will help you with the APFT, but can admit that I am faster and stronger in all of my disciplines. I discovered Crossfit after finishing my first 50mi trail run last April. I came out of the race feeling invincible, and ended up pushing too hard and getting injured. Pulled hammies, IT band problems, etc... I am 10 months into CF and am seeing not only dramatic improvements in physique, but my run times are smoking fast.
Another site that ties in with CF is www.crossfitendurance.com . Combining CFE with CF will definitely boost your running performance. I train for multisport in CFE, and cannot wait to test the new skills in the two triathlons I've signed up for this year. Keep up the good work!

  • Hey, thanks for the website and I'll certainly check it out. After 18 months of hard running training and basic APFT stuff, I went strictly crossfit in Sept 08. I took a APFT in December and was a bit disappointed. I was impressed with my run times in that I was in fact able to maintain my base pace. However, my push-ups and sit-ups dropped. I kept to nothing but Crossfit until last month. I wasn't seeing the strength in endurance of where I wanted to be in those exercises and plus I am training for a distance run. I plan to stick to the crossfit but add extra running and cals. We'll see in a couple of months when I test out again. Interested in your endurance runs.
