Can you hit the "wall" in training?

So I am five weeks away from my marathon her ein Toronto. Two weeks ago I had the worst training week ever, I only did one run that was 4.5 km. Then during this past week I rocked my training and ran a PB in distance, 30km in 3:00 hours.

I was pleased with the completion of the 30 km run and my time, but I am now starting to question my training. Will that one bad week ruin my training?

I originally altered my training schedule to fit my work schedule and am only running 3 times a week, 2 long runs and then the really long weekend run. This worked for my half marathons, my PB of 1:43, but will it work for a full marathon??

Has anyone else experienced hitting a mental wall like this in their training leading up to their marathon??

  • Hey Mike,

Been training for my first marathon too and have hit the wall twice in training. In so doing I found a great resource that helped me work through the bad weeks. Check out www.marathontrainacademy.com and see it if helps. So far I was able to overcome the bad weeks and responds with some good ones. Good luck hope your marathon goes well

  • yeah man, hitting the wall is the worst, especially when you are "taking it easy"

its tough to bounce back. what i did was simply adapt. Instead of a long slow run, i changed midway through the run and would sprint/walk.

Sometimes just changing your strategy for that day and remaining flexible will chg your mental attitude and help you get over the wall and make it more of a low fence :)
