my first marathon!

Where and when will your first marathon be?

posted about 3 years ago | Report

I'm running my first marathon in August at the Leading Ladies Marathon in Spearfish, SD - it's all women and pretty small with only about 100 marathon finishers, but a few hundred half marathoners. I am both scared and excited! Where and when are you running your first?!

  • Hi all! I just joined this group and I'm excited/crazy nervous for my first marathon. Mine is a local race on September 13 in St. Charles, MO called the Lewis & Clark Marathon.

I just finished my first 1/2 in May (Indy Mini with 35,000 runners) so this race will be much smaller but I expect it to be a TON of fun! Last year, hurricane Ike came through the St. Louis area on race day and completely washed out the race course. They had to shorten both the 1/2 and the full marathons to just 10 miles. This year they have a "Hurricane Guarantee" and you'll get your money back if it happens again!

    Thanks for the question Shannon!

  • My first will be the Fox Cities Marathon Sept 20, 2009. I have yet to register for some reason. I have run two 1/2 but never any further than that. I guess I want to make sure I can do this, but I'm not sure anyone really knows until they cross the line at the finish. I am enjoying the training so far, feeling positive. I guess its time to fill out that registration form.

    Good luck to everyone else!

I live in Australia but my first marathon is going to be the NY on Nov 1st.
I decided that if I was going to do one then I wanted to make it a pretty major one.'
    Very excited about it now.
Going to do my first half in July in prep.

Nothing to be nervous about... Hartford was my 2nd Marathon last year and still my best time. Leaning towards doing the Marine Corp in October so I might do the Hartford Half this year and see if I can improve my time. Hartford is also my best time for the Half... Thanks those are encouraging words! How's the course for Hartford? Is it really hilly? If so I should probably be training more with hills, since I live on top of one shouldn't be too hard :)

  • Hello all. Just started training for my first marathon, White Rock Maraton, Dec 13th 2009. Training has been going really well, logged my longest run today, 9.3 miles in 1:11:23, so I'm totally excited to see how my longer runs will look like. My goal for the White Rock is to finish under 3:30, and so far, it's looking pretty promising. Good luck everyone.

  • Marine Corp April 25, 2009. My first marathon. My goal is to finish. I would like to finish in under 5 hours and try for 4:47. That would be around the 11 minute pace I seem to be doing all my training runs at for this training program I am in.

  • My first marathon is coming up in September 2009. I'll be running the Lewis & Clark marathon in St. Charles (St. Louis), Missouri. My goal is to run it in 4:20, right around a 10/mile pace. I'd love to go sub 4, but my training has been sketchy over the past few weeks due to an overuse injury. I went from long runs between 12-15 back down to 5. I'm planning to start ramping up the miles next month and hit a long run of 20 somewhere in mid August.

Unfortunately, I get a severe hamstring tendonitis after that run and spent months in physical therapy. It has been a long, slow return to running, but I am determined to run the full marathon this year. I'm already starting to feel some tightness and soreness in my hamstring and I haven't run more than 7 miles at a time yet. I'm a little nervous about how it's going to go -- wish me luck!

I recently re-connected with a High School friend/sprinter after 20 years who was so positive and convincing in her descriptions of her training for the Grandma's Full Marathon(08,09) that it motivated me to run again. I recently set a PR in the Rochester Mn Half Marathon of 1:43:52, and my Goal is to finish Sub 4 Hrs in the Full, either at Whistlestop or at Grandma's in june of 2010. Im in the later stages of a 17 week training program, and Im Registered and got my confirmation post card in the mail a month ago. The Money is PAID! Register People, nothing like your Money already put down to Motivate you! Plus being in shape again feels Great! :)

Gary you can do it! Just remember to "run your own race" don't get caught up in a "faster pack", do your Race Pace and just keep Cruising! Remember, even though you may feel great in the beggining you need to start out slow and ease into your pace in the first 3 miles. Be sure to walk the water stops and drink all the Powerade in both cups, but "it's not a Hotel". Consistant pacing in the first half of the race translates directly into minutes faster finish at the line. Just Finishing is a Huge accomplishment for anyone and it establishes a "bench mark" to shoot at for the following marathons. Have a Great Race! Be sure to let us know how it went for you.

I was hoping to run the Rock N" Roll marathon here this June but I had a setback in my training due to a torn meniscus in my right knee. My body had to remind me that even though I felt like I could still train like I was 20 something, I had to tune my ear more closely to what my 40 something body was telling me. I've learned alot and I am really excited to keep pursuing this life goal of mine.

  • Hello :)

Having done some running 4 years ago, culminating in the great north run half-marathon, I then ceased running for a while...
Back in September I finally got my acceptance letter for the London Marathon, after 4 years of trying, so I'll be running my first marathon in London on 22nd April this year.

At the mo I'm pretty apprehensive, but am sticking closely to my training schedule and managing to get through it all. I've just about got over the fear that I might be finishing as they pack up the course around me... and hope to be able to keep running for the whole course rather than use a run/walk strategy. (Tho I'm realistic enough to appreciate that things may not go perfectly on the day, so need to be flexible on my race plan).

Any advice and tips would be gratefully received :)
